Abstract

 According to Myanmar geographical condition, PV power plants are the best

renewable energy source to provide electricity.
 This thesis is to obtain the optimal combination of hybrid (PV and Diesel)
system for rural electrification which can provide the continuous reliable power
supply to the village.
 The solar system is designed based on the load profile of the selected village
and available solar irradiation.
 The solar system design consists of the sizing of photovoltaic modules, sizing of
battery bank and selecting of the inverter.
 The optimal combination of PV and diesel hybrid system is carried out using
HOMER Pro software.

3
Introduction
 Renewable energy is used in worldwide because of improving in the renewable
energy technology and awareness for reducing greenhouse gas emissions,
abundant, clean, silent, reliable, with very small maintenance, cost efficient, and
ecological impact.
 Hybrid power systems combine two or more electricity generation methods, like
diesel engines and solar panels, into a single plant to reduce long term
generation costs.
 The purpose of PV-Diesel Hybrid technology is to provide electricity for 24
hours to the customers but reducing the operation hours of diesel generator in an
optimal way.
 Generator is used to provide the required additional power that is the gap
between the present load and the actual generated power by PV system.
 The systems consist of PV arrays, diesel generator, batteries and inverter.
 The basic operation is controlled by knowing the condition of load and battery.

4
Aim and Objectives
Aim
The main aim is to obtain the optimum design of PV-Diesel hybrid power
system for supplying continuous electric power to U Swan Taung Village with
lowest cost.

Objectives
 To improve the living standard of the remote rural villages by implementing
the Renewable Energy base electrification system.
 To turn sunlight into plentiful electricity and reduce the fuel consumption and
Greenhouse Gas (CO2) emissions in rural area.
 To improve the supply system reliability and power quality, better voltage
support and also results in better stability. 5
Thesis Statement
 In this thesis, the rural electrification is selected for using renewable source of PV-
Diesel hybrid system to provide the sufficient energy at optimal cost and more
Renewable Fraction.
 PV-Diesel Hybrid system is performed in order to supply the continuous power with
the optimum cost for the U Swan Taung Village in Sittwe Township in Rakhine
Region of Myanmar. It is located at latitude (20.72439) and longitude (92.93750).
 There are about (297) households with (1148) population in this village. The power
supply does not reach from the national grid system to the village and the national grid
is far about (2.75 km).
 The intention of the PV-Diesel hybrid system is to supply the electricity for 24-hour to
the whole village. The load demand is about 270 kWh per day and 48 kW peak
demand.
 The performances are considered technically and economically by using HOMER Pro
optimization software. 6
Methodology

 Load estimation for the selected village (maximum power demand, daily
energy consumption, etc.)
 The data surveying for the available solar irradiation and ambient
temperature.
 Application of HOMER Pro software for obtaining the optimal Solar PV-
Diesel hybrid system.
 Analysis on the performance of the designed hybrid system based on the
simulation results.

7
Preliminary Results and Discussion
 The load demand is calculated as about 270 kWh/day average power.
 According to the study, the maximum sun hour of the selected village is about 5
hour.
 For solar PV system design, the numbers of PV modules, the size of inverter and
numbers of battery are calculated.
 For diesel generator, the power rating of generator is calculated based on the
available power and energy from the PV system and fuel cost.
 And then, the optimal combination of Solar PV-Diesel hybrid system is obtained
using Homer Pro software.
 The design system can be helpful for rural electrification based on hybrid system
in Myanmar.
8
Future Study
 Theoretical study and literature reviews on solar PV-diesel hybrid system.

 Study on HOMER Pro software for optimization of hybrid energy supply system.

 Data collection and load estimation for selected village.

 Data collection for available solar irradiation at selected location.

 Modeling of the PV-Diesel hybrid supply system using HomerPro software.

 Calculation for the cost of the systems.

 Analysis on the performance of the hybrid supply system based on the simulation
results.
9
Conclusion

 An important conclusion is that the choosing system devices represent an

important step in the optimal sizing of the PV-Diesel Hybrid system so that the
system operation will improve the reliability for demand load.
 The PV-Diesel Hybrid configuration has several advantages: meeting the
system load demand in the optimal way; minimizing diesel usage and
maintenance; optimal use of renewables etc.
 Finally, the study conducted in this work will enrich the literature in rural
electrification with specific attention given to Myanmar and it is anticipated to
contribute to the knowledge of PV-Diesel Hybrid system potentially in
Myanmar.
