HOW DO THE ENGLISH CELEBRATE

CHRISTMAS

Viktoria Kaneva
PREPARATION FOR
CHRISTMAS`

In the UK and many other countries, the main

celebration takes place on Christmas Day (25
December). From the Christian origins of the
holiday, this day marks the birth of Jesus
Christ. Christmas Eve (24 December) is the
time for last-minute shopping and
preparations, present-wrapping and maybe a
drink in the pub.
CHRISTMAS THREE

• The tree itself has traditionally been an

evergreen conifer, such as a pine or a fir,
which for centuries has been used to
celebrate winter festivals in both the
Christian and pagan tradition. Christmas
is a celebration of miracles and
prosperity.
CHRISTMAS DINNER

• The traditional Christmas dinner

includes mashed potatoes,
vegetables, stuffed roasted fowl
(pheasant, goose, duck or turkey) and
gravy. Other non-traditional main
favorites are ham, roast beef or
lasagna.
TRADITIONS

Families welcome the warmth and cheer of

a Yule log blazing on the hearth. They
decorate their homes with holly ivy, and
other evergreens . Throughout the holidays,
carolers go from house at twilight ringing
handbells and singing Christmas songs.
