WHAT IS ALGAE?
 Algae are defined as a group of predominantly
aquatic, photosynthetic, and nucleus-bearing
organisms that lack the true roots, stems, leaves,
and specialized multicellular reproductive
structures of plants.
WHAT IS BIODIESEL?
INGREDIENTS THAT WE
NEEDED:
 Na(OH)
 Alcohol
 Glass tube
 Dropper
 Algae
PROCESS OR STEPS:
1.Algal oil is converted into biodiesel through a
transesterification process.
2. Oil extracted from the algae is mixed with alcohol
and an acid or a base to produce the fatty acid methyl
esters that makes up the biodiesel.
3. An excess of methanol is used to force the reaction
to favor the right side of the equation.
WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS USING
ALGAE TO PRODUCE BIODIESEL?
 Algae contain more oil in a smaller area than some
other crops. Scientists aren't sure how much more
oil. ...
 Algae do not need farmland. ...
 Algae could help improve air pollution. ...
 Algae need water, but it doesn't have to be clean
water.
WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL OF
ALGAE BIOFUEL?
 Algae-based biofuels hold enormous potential for
helping reduce our dependence on foreign oil. In a
study by the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific
Northwest National Laboratory found that 17
percent of the United States' imported oil for
transportation could be replaced with homegrown,
algae-based biofuels.
WHAT IS THE PRODUCTION COST
OF BIODIESEL FROM ALGAE?
 Theproduction of biodiesel from microalgae was
analyzed in this study. The final production cost of
biodiesel was estimated as 0.33 € L−1 and of
biomass 2.01 € kg−1, in a 15.247 ha facility size,
with capacity for producing about 1,811 tons of
dry microalgae biomass and 171,705 L of
biodiesel.
