INTRODUCTION

• Urethritis- is inflammation of urethra.


• Most infections are caused by infection caused by pathogen that enter from
skin around urethral opening.
• Commensal flora of urethra-
Enterobacteriaceae

• Mainly caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
• Which is a gram negative,non motile, non spore forming diplococci.
• Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection of epithelium and commonly
manifests as cervicitis,urethritis,proctitis and conjunctivitis.

AETIOLOGY

• Haemophilus species,Herpes simplex virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and


Adenovirus can lead to urethritis in patients who practice oral to penile
contact.
• Enteric bacteria have been implicated in patients who practice insertive anal
intercourse.
• In most patients with NGU, the causative organism cannot be identified.
• Non gonococcal urethritis\ non specific urethritis.
• Chronic urethritis where gonococci cannot be demonstrated.
• Or cocci which are undetectable.
• Non gonococcal urethritis is 2.5 times more common.
PRE DISPOSING RISK FACTORS
• Sexual contact in which exchange of body fluid may occur.
• May report multiple sexual partners.
• Non- STI: secondary to catheterization or other instrumentation of the
urethra, in association with other factors that contribute to urinary tract
infections.
• Incubation period- 7-21 days.
