Human-computer Interaction

What is Human-computer Interaction?

The study of interaction between users and computers.

Well designed, effective computer systems generate positive feelings of success, competence, mastery, and clarity in the user community. When an interactive system is welldesigned, the interface almost disappears, enabling users to concentrate on their work, exploration, or pleasure.

Interaction

Interaction between users and computers occurs at the user interface includes both software and hardware .

Goals
Basic goals

improve the interactions between users and computers by making computers more usable and receptive to the user's needs.

Major Concerned with

methodologies and processes for designing interfaces methods for implementing interfaces techniques for evaluating and comparing interfaces developing new interfaces and interaction techniques developing descriptive and predictive models and theories of interaction

Long term goals

to design systems that minimize the barrier between the human's cognitive model of what they want to accomplish and the computer's understanding of the user's task.

Design Principles

Offer informative feedback Reduce working memory load Provide alternative interfaces for novoice and expert users

Design Methodologies

User-centered design users must take center-stage in the design of any computer system Principles of User Interface Design Tolerance, Simplicity, Visibility, Affordance, Consistency, Structure and Feedback.

Display Designs

Icons and color highligthing Brushing and linking Panning and zooming Magic lenses Use of animations Overview and detail

Human Computer Interface

Can be described as the point of communication between the human user and the computer. The flow of information between the human and computer is defined as the loop of interaction. The loop of interaction has several aspects to it including:

Task Environment Machine Environment Areas of the Interface Input Flow Output Feedback

Current Research

Group Interfaces User Tailorability Embedded computation Augmented reality

Future for HCI expected to include foll characteristic

Ubiquitous communication High functionality systems Mass availibility of computer graphics Mixed media High-bandwidth interaction Large and thin displays Information Utilities
