– Human characteristics that make people
different from one another.
– The diversity consists of visible and non-
visible differences which will include factors
such as gender, age, background, race,
disability, personality and work style.

Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)
• Equal employment opportunity – the
condition in which all individuals have an
equal chance for employment, regardless of
their race, color, religion, gender, age,
disability, or national origin.

– The term ‘EEO’ is derived from the Civil Rights Act


of 1964 in the US.

• Article 27 of the Constitution of Pakistan,
prohibit discrimination based on gender in
“Services of Pakistan.”

• Further it “make it obligatory to take steps to


ensure full participation of women in all
spheres of national life.”

• Following Acts are used to determine working
hours and rest time in different industries:
– The Factories Act, 1934,
– Mines Act, 1923
– Shops and Establishment Ordinance, 1969
– Road Transport Ordinance, 1961

EEO and Pakistani Laws
• In 2000, the Federal government announced Labor
Welfare Package for Workers making it obligatory for
the organizations to offer gender equality including:
– Equal remuneration for men and women for work of equal
value through appropriate legislation.
– Safeguards against sexual harassment through appropriate
actions.
– Recruitment of female labor inspectors for enforcement of
labor laws on female workers.
– Extension of coverage of laws to agriculture and other
informal sectors of economy.

Anti Harassment Laws in Pakistan
• In March 2010, the government passed two
laws against sexual harassment in the
workplace.
• The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act amended
the Pakistan Penal Code and the Code of
Criminal Procedure, making workplace
harassment against women punishable with
imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of
500,000 rupees or both.

equity in the organization. The first meeting is
coming up and the chair has asked every
member to bring a list of gender equity issues
and concerns they would like to raise for
discussion by the committee.
