Water pollution

What do you mean by water pollution?

Water pollution (or aquatic pollution) is the contamination of water bodies, usually as a
result of human activities that has negative effects. For example: lakes, ocean, sea, and
rivers.
Causes of water
pollution

• Industrial discharges
• Agriculture runoff
• Lack of proper sewage system
• Climate change
• Deforestation
• Oil spills
Effects of water
pollution on ecosystem

aquatic life aquatic plants Human health Loss of biodiversity

Aquatic animals
• Polluted water harms fishes, amphibians and other organism. Toxins that come from
factories and fertilizers are accumulated in their tissues and hence resulting lack of
growth, reproduction and survive species less. Moreover it is leading to the decline of
many species. Due the climate change many fish migrate to north side because of heated
water in that region.
Aquatic plants
• The flora of aquatic ecosystem is disturbed by the fertilizer that came into water due to
flooding. The excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus can lead to algal bloom,
which consume oxygen and ultimately harming the aquatic ecosystem. On the other
hand when water becomes too cold or hot the coral reef suffer damage
Human health
• Polluted water doesn’t only effects the aquatic ecosystem but also effects the human health.
Contaminated water contains toxic chemicals, heavy metals and microorganisms can causes
many diseases such as cholera, dysentery and hepatitis. Long term exposure may lead to
disorders and reproductive issue
Disruption of food chain
Water pollution can disrupt this balance. For example if a fish that is affected due to
contamination of water which is the main source of any other organism it may also affect
that specie and spread all over the marine species
