NUTRITION?

• Nutrition is the process of consuming and using food to provide the body with
energy and nutrients.

• It is a complex topic that involves many different factors, including;

The types of food we eat

The way we prepare our food

And our individual metabolism.

AGRICULTURE?

• Agriculture is the practice of cultivating soil, plants, and livestock to

produce food, fiber, and other essential products for human sustenance.

• Agriculture plays a pivotal role in global economies, providing livelihoods

for millions and ensuring a stable food supply.

Key Importance of Agriculture to Nutrition
Science.

Agriculture and nutrition share a common entry point which are;

1. Food Production and good nutrition practice

2. Ensuring food security and

3. Nutrition Security

These therefore promote availability, accessibility, sustainability and

stability of food to household.
Food Security?

• Food security is defined by the World Food submit (1996) as “a

situation that exists when all people, at all times, have physical,
social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food,
to meet;

Their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy
life”.
Nutrition Security?

Nutrition Security

• Is as a result of availability, access, utilization, and stability of the food

supply that contributes to a healthy and well-nourished population.

• Achieving nutrition security requires addressing factors such as food

availability, affordability, quality, and knowledge about proper
nutrition.
Agricultural Pathway to Nutrition

Agriculture-to-nutrition pathways are strategies that link agricultural interventions

to improvements in nutrition outcomes. Here are a few examples:

1. Dietary Diversification

2. Livestock Integration

3. Nutrition-sensitive Agricultural Programs

4. Value Chain Interventions

5. Livestock Integration
Nutrition-sensitive interventions

Nutrition-sensitive interventions are those interventions whose

primary objective is not nutrition, but that which have potential
to improve food and nutrition security of beneficiaries.

Nutrition sensitive interventions are largely delivered by the

education, agriculture, livestock, water and sanitation, women
and children and other sectors.
Nutrition-specific interventions

Nutrition Specific Interventions are approaches beneficial in managing

behaviourial, and psychological symptoms associated with malnutrition. There
include:

 Providing a well-balanced diet with adequate nutrient

 Offering smaller, more frequent meals to prevent overeating or frustration.

 Collaborating with a dietitian to develop individualized meal plans based on

the person's specific needs and preferences.
Unicef conceptual framework

 The UNICEF Nutrition Strategy 2020–2030 is guided by UNICEF’s Conceptual

Framework on the Determinants of Maternal and Child Nutrition, 2020.

 The 2020 Framework builds on UNICEF’s 1990 conceptual work, acknowledges

the increasing triple burden of

1. Malnutrition – undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and

2. Overweight – and highlights the role of diets and care as immediate

determinants of maternal and child nutrition.
