INDIAN FREEDOM

FIGHTERS
The 200 years of oppression of the British rule came to an end
due to the mass movement all over the country . It’s not only
Eastern part or western part or Northern Part or southern
Part ,which got involved in our National movement to get the
Independence, it was the collective effort from each and every
regions of India ,which finally gave us what we craved for so
long. Our freedom fighters played a vital role in achieving a free
India. They led the people in the struggle for freedom, and
gave their lives for their country, and we must honour them for
their inspiring achievements.
Let’s cherish the glorious contributions of some of the true
patriots from different regions of India.
NORTH INDIA
NORTH INDIA
• North India is a loosely defined region consisting of the northern part of India.
The dominant geographical features of the North India are the Indus-Gangetic
Plain and the Himalayas, which demarcate the region from the Tibetan Plateau
and Central Asia.
• It has been the historical centre of the Mughal Empire, the Delhi Sultanate and
the British Indian Empire. It has a diverse culture. North India’s culture, Ganga-
Jamuni Tehzeeb, developed as a result of interaction between these Hindu and
Muslim religious traditions.
• In the later 18th century, Great Britain and France
Struggled for dominance, partly through proxy Indian
Rulers but also by direct military intervention
RAM PRASAD BISMIL(1897-1927)
• Ram Prasad Bismil was an Indian revolutionary who participated the
Manipuri conspiracy of 1918, and the Kakori conspiracy of 1925, and
fought against British imperialism.
• Bismil was hanged on 19 December 1927 by the British for his
revolutionary activities.
• As well as being a freedom fighter, he was a patriotic poet and wrote in
Hindi and Urdu using the pen names Ram, Agyat and Bismil. But, he
became popular with the last name "Bismil" only.
HEMU KALANI(1923-1943)
• Hemu Kalani was a Sindhi revolutionary and freedom fighter during
the Indian Independence Movement.
• He was a leader of Swaraj Sena, a student organisation which was
affiliated with All India Students Federation.
• He was one of the youngest revolutionaries to be martyred for the
nation's freedom struggle, being executed by the British when he was
only 19, two months before his 20th birthday.
ASHFAQULLA KHAN(1900-1927)
• Ashfaqulla Khan was a freedom fighter who fought against the British
forces. He was born in Shahjahanpur.
• After the Chauri Chaura incident in 1922 when Mahatma Gandhi decided
to withdraw the movement, Ashfaqulla was not happy. Along with his
friends, he decided to decided to form an organization named Hindustan
Republican Association.
• He was later arrested for his involvement in Kakori Train Robbery and
sentenced to death. He was hanged on December 19, 1927.
SOUTHERN INDIA
• South India is a region consisting of the southern part
of India, which encompasses the Indian states of Andhra
Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana as
well as the union territories of Lakshadweep and
Puducherry.
• During its history, a number of dynastic kingdoms ruled
over parts of South India like Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas,
Pallavas, Chalukyas, Deccan Sultanates etc. and the Muslim
conquests in the Indian subcontinent across southern Asia
impacted the history and culture in those regions.
• By the middle of the 18th century, the French and
the British were involved in a prolonged struggle for
military control over South India. After the defeat of Tipu
Sultan in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799, the British
consolidated their power over much of present-day South
India, with the exception of French Pondicherry.
Pingali Venkayya
Some of the most important freedom fighters of South India
who contributed to freedom struggle are:

 Pingali Venkayya- He was the designer of the National Flag. Tanguturi Prakasam

 Tanguturi Prakasam- He was also known for his brave


confrontation with the British Police during the 1928
protests against the Simon Commission. Veerapandiya Kattabomman

 Veerapandiya Kattabomman- He was a courageous


chieftain from Tamil Nadu who refused to accept the
sovereignty of British East India Company.

 Puli Thevar- Nelkatumseval was the headquarters of Puli


Thevar, the first chieftain in India to resist the British. The Maruthu Pandiyar brothers

 The Maruthu Pandiyar brothers- Periya Maruthu & Chinna


Maruthu ruled Sivagangai in Tamil Nadu during the last Puli Thevar
part of the 18th century and were the first to issue a
proclamation of independence from the British rule.

NETAJI SUBHAS CHANDRA
BOSE
Subhas Chandra Bose was an Indian nationalist
whose defiant patriotism made him a hero in India,
but whose attempts during World War II to rid India
of British rule with the help of Nazi Germany and
Imperial Japan left a troubled legacy.
“Give me blood and I will give you freedom!” is one of
his most quoted lines is from a speech that Bose
delivered to the soldiers of Indian National Army that he
commanded along with Mohan Singh.

TAJI MIDEREN

A resident of Elopain village in the Ithun


Valley, Lohit District, North-East Frontier
Agency (Arunachal Pradesh), Taji
Mideren was a farmer and trader. He
took part in the activities against British
rule and killed three British officers near
the Dikran river in 1905. He organized
his Mishmi fellow tribals and got them to
come together to resist the expansion of
British authority. He established a
Mishmi Confederacy under Pangon and
other Mishmi leaders
Kiang Nangbah
Kiang Nangbah was a freedom fighter
from Meghalaya who led an uprising against
the British. He was hanged by the British
publicly at Iawmusiang in Jowai town in West
Jaintia Hills district on 30 December 1862. A
postage stamp was issued by Government of
India to commemorate him in 2001. A
government college was also opened at Jowai
in 1967 in his honour.
WESTERN INDIA
• Western Region is a loosely defined region of India
comprising of the states of Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra,
and Daman and Diu of the union territory
• During its history , Parts of Gujarat were the site of The
Indus Valley Civilization. The Western Indian region was
ruled by the Rashtrakuta Empire, the Maurya Empire,
the Gupta Empire, Rajputs, Indo Greeks, Kadambas etc.
in ancient times. During the medieval age, the area was
under the rule of the Vaghela dynasty, the Gujarat
Sultanate, and the Delhi Sultanate. Thereafter, the area
was under the Mughal rule
• Later, the Maratha Empire which arose in western
Maharashtra came to dominate a major portion of the
Indian sub-continent. However, its defeat by the British
in the Anglo-Maratha wars left most of India under
colonial rule. Gandhi's Dandi March took place in
Gujarat. The region became part of independent India in
1947, and the present state boundaries were drawn
based on linguistic considerations in 1956.
Some of the most important freedom fighters of West India who
contributed to freedom struggle are:
• 1. Bal Gangadhar Tilak ( Lokmanya Tilak)
• Bal Gangadhar Tilak, born as Keshav Gangadhar Tilak, was an Indian nationalist,
teacher, and an independence activist. He was one third of the Lal Bal Pal
triumvirate.
Tilak was the first leader of the Indian independence movement. The British
colonial authorities called him "The father of the Indian unrest."

• 2 .Ravishankar Maharaj :
• Ravishankar Vyas, was an Indian independence activist, social worker and
Gandhian from Gujarat.
• Born : 25 February 1884, Kheda
• Died : 1 July 1984, Borsad
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
• Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, anti-
colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed
nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's
independence from British rule and in turn inspired movements
for civil rights and freedom across the world. Mahatma Gandhi
was a renowned freedom activist and an authoritative or
powerful political leader. He was also considered as the father of
the country. Gandhi organized Indian resistance, fought anti-
Indian legislation in the courts and led large protests against the
colonial government. Along the way, he developed a public FATHER OF INDIA
persona and a philosophy of truth-focused, non-violent non-
cooperation he called Satyagraha.
