CONTEXT AND RATIONALE
Learning Mathematics became even harder than it was before in today’s still “new
normal”. Students were used to modular approach with self-learning modules (SLMs) in
Mathematics that gave rise to uncertainties, anxieties and fears, as students in general, consider
Mathematics as the hardest subject. While a solution to a mathematics problem is well-presented
in a module or in an additional learning activity sheets, it will never be enough, will never be as
efficient and will never be as effective. The scenario involving problem solving in mathematics is a
thing that students would not want to encounter but they have no choice. Mathematics teachers
might be unsuccessful in developing the students toward the twin goal of the K-12 mathematics-
critical thinking and problem solving. This is still true until now.
Meanwhile, among the many issues and concerns related to mathematics teaching and
learning, the most common are the problem solving performance of students and the math anxiety
level of students (Corrective Math, n.d.; Hewson, n.d.).

CONTEXT AND RATIONALE
Problem solving plays an important role in mathematics and has a prominent role in the
mathematics education of K-12 students but mathematics teachers are oblivious in incorporating
meaningful problem solving into their teaching (National Council of Teacher of Mathematics,
2010). Numerous studies claimed that there are factors that greatly affect the students’
understanding and skills in solving mathematical problems. Tella (2008) found that mathematics
achievement was influenced by teachers’ self-efficacy, interest and teaching experiences. However,
according to Ajaberi (2015), learning styles affect the students’ ability to solve math problems.
Various studies were also conducted regarding the students’ difficulties in Problem-solving. Among
the identified difficulties affecting mathematical performance are computational and
mathematical skills (Fuschs, et al.,, 2000; Helwig, Rozek-Tedesco, Tindal, Heath, & Almond,
2010; Jiban & Deno, 2007; Lamb, 2010), problem representation and strategies. Based from the
findings of the study by Angateeah (2017), students face difficulties in decoding the language
and visualizing the problem.

Same scenario in the difficulty of learners in terms of mathematical and problem solving is
involved is also observed by the researcher even before the onset of the Covid-19 and much more
during the pandemic until this time of face to face teaching-learning. The lack of appropriate
instructional-learning materials is one of the many factors that lead to having low mastery level of
Grade 9 students in Mabalbalino National High School in some of the most essential learning
competencies (MELCs) in Mathematics last school year.
Further, another reason why students sometimes find it difficult to comprehend
immediately mathematical and problem solving activities, is the non-availability of additional
instructional-learning materials students can use at home that can easily convey the message of the
lesson to the students, aside from today’s just started face to face learning from the very long
distance learning before.
Moreover, from parents’ comments during the pandemic’s homeschooling of their children,
especially in mathematics, they too have struggled in guiding their children answer the weekly
activities in their mathematics modules that’s why until now students

still ask the help of their parents specially in their mathematics subject. Requests were even asked
that the teachers in mathematics will give additional instructional materials for students which
they can use in studying at home and in doing their assignments.
Studies shows that instructional-learning materials improve students’ knowledge, abilities,
and skills, monitor their assimilation of information, and contribute to their overall growth and
development. It explains important concepts to engage and sustain student’s interests, provide
every student the opportunity to impart experiences essential for new learning as well as aid in
making learning more permanent. Instructional-learning materials are tools locally made or
imported that help to facilitate the teaching/learning process according to Abdullahhi (2016). Use
of instructional-learning materials can draw student’s attention by creating interest goals that will
help the student achieve through direct efforts. Instructional-learning materials does not only help
to motivate and develop interest on the part of the student, but also help to bring about an enhance
respect for teacher’s knowledge of the subject, according to Osuala (2010). So that learning will
take place, the teacher has to make

use of these instructional-learning materials that would enable him/her to teach effectively.
During this time of face to face learning just after the Covid-19 pandemic, merely relying
on classroom discussion teaching-learning approach cannot be the key to successful pedagogy;
therefore, the teacher has to choose or create/develop and use appropriate instructional-learning
materials to make teaching and learning process effective, interesting and continued even at home.
Not all concepts were mastered by students during those pandemic times including those lessons
that are now pre-requisites to the next grade level. The two-year distance learning had not fully
taught the students’ needed skills in mathematics. From these grounds, the researcher as a
mathematics high school teacher aims to create/develop an instructional-learning material project
innovation using self-made instructional-learning videos - “Maths On Video Instructions
Exemplar” in the teaching of Mathematics as an additional learning guide to Grader 9 students in
Mabalbalino National High School during the school year 2022-2023.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
This action research study aims to develop instructional-learning material project
innovation- “Maths on Video Instructions Exemplar” in the teaching of Mathematics to Grade
9 students in Mabalbalino National High School for the school year 2023-2024.
Specifically, this research study seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the level of performance in Mathematics of Grade 9 students
during the first quarter assessments?
2. What are the weaknesses (least mastered) most essential learning
competencies (MELCs) in Mathematics of the Grade 9 students based on the
item analysis of the first quarter assessments?
3. What is the level of performance in Mathematics of Grade 9

certain criteria based on the evaluation of some experts and the Grade 9
teachers.
5. Is there significant difference between the levels of performance in
Mathematics of Grade 9 students in the quarterly assessments before and
after the use of the instructional-learning material- project
innovation-“Maths on Video Instructions Exemplar”?
