PATTERNS AND

ALGEBRA
What is Pattern?
–Pattern is an arrangement of
lines or shapes, especially a
design in which the same shape
is repeated at regular intervals
over a surface.
TWO TYPES OF PATTERN

•REPEATING PATTERN
•CONTINUOUS PATTERN
Repeating Pattern
– is a pattern that repeats themselves over and
over again according to a certain rule.

Primary parts of Repeating Pattern

•Terms– the items or elements which create a
pattern.
• Core– the elements of repeating pattern, which
remain the same as well as repeat themselves.
Example:

Continuous Pattern
–It is a pattern where something is
added in the turns.
Primary Parts of Continuous Pattern
•Terms– each part of the continuous
pattern.
•Rule– the fixed order in which a
continuous pattern increase.
Example:

2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12,___,___

Terms: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16

Rule: +2
Sequence
– Is an arrangement of any objects or a
set of numbers in a particular order
followed by some rule.

Parts of Sequence
•Terms– are the numbers that form a
sequence
•Rule – Is the specific order that a sequence
follows.
Example:
Jane arranges stamps in her album. She
arranges 4 stamps in the first page, 7
stamps in the second page, 10 stamps in
the third page, and so on. If her album has
10 pages how many stamps are there on
the last page?

Let us find the 100th term in the sequence 4, 7,
10... we may use a table to determine the
pattern and formulate a rule.

2 7 (2×3) +1

3 10 3 (3×3) +1

... ... ...

100 N (100×3) +1
Formula:
An=A1+d(n-1)

An– is the nth term

A1– is the first term
d– is the common difference
n– is the term position
