 How is modern Wales governed? While Wales has its own government and parliament today, from the early 1700s
until the late 1990s. Wales was ruled in law by the government of the United Kingdom (UK). Both the UK
Government and Parliament are based in Westminster in London, England.
TRADITIONS

 1. Every heir to the British throne is named Prince of Wales until he ascends
the throne. The first holder of this title was Gruffud ap Cynan.
 2. Wales’ national day, St David’s Day, is celebrated by wearing an abundance
of daffodils and taking part in various festivities, including parades in the
bigger cities. Schoolchildren in particular get into the spirit by dressing up
head to toe in traditional outfits, with tall black hats, red cloaks, striped flannel
and shawls.
 3. Giving a spoon as a token of love is about giving a wooden love spoon to
your sweetheart as a love token.
