The Merge

often referred to as agrotourism. Has
historical roots in rural areas where
farming practices and natural
landscapes became attractions for
visitors. This has been formalized
through the development of Rural Agro-
tourism (RA).

Global Origins
• Early Traces: Evidence suggests links
between agriculture and travel as far back as
ancient civilizations. Pilgrimages to sites of
religious significance often involved
experiencing local agricultural practices and
products.

• Modernization and Leisure: The Industrial

Revolution and rising incomes in the 19th
and 20th centuries fueled travel for leisure.
Visits to rural areas to witness and participate
in agricultural life became popular,
particularly in Europe and North America.
• Post-War Growth:

After World War II, agritourism

gained momentum as a way to
revitalize rural economies and
preserve cultural heritage.
Governments in various
countries offered support and
regulations to encourage
responsible development.

Philippine
Context
• Indigenous Practices:
Traditional Filipino communities have
long integrated tourism with their
agricultural way of life, offering
visitors homestays, cultural
experiences, and locally-sourced food.

• Legislative Recognition:

The Republic Act No. 9593, or the

Tourism Act of 2009, acknowledges
the potential of agritourism in its
Section 14, which encourages its
development alongside farm tourism
and ecotourism.

farm-to-table experiences.

development and entrepreneurship.

agritourism offerings.

departments merging into one

industries to provide a number of financial,
educational, and social benefits to tourists,
producers, and communities.

generate additional income and an avenue for
direct marketing to consumers.

• It enhances the tourism industry by increasing
