Point-of-view (POV)

The point of view in a work of

literature is determined by the
narrator, that is, the person telling
the story.
Point-of-view (POV)
- It refers to the narrator’s point of
view/viewpoint/perspective/opinion
-focus on the narration to determine
the POV
-words in dialogue do not count.
There are three main types of point
of view:

1. First-Person Point of View

2.Second-Person Point of View 3.
Third-Person Point of View
1. First Person point of view involves the use of
personal pronouns I, me, we , us, our and my.

The narrator is a character in the story

Example:
1. I felt like heaven when I ate the ice cream.
2. I got up when I heard my mom calling me.
1. First Person point of view

I can’t believe what is happening to me. I know

that I’ll never convince Mr. Johnson and the cop
that I had nothing to do with this. Man! I didn’t
do it. Why won’t anyone believe me? I’ve been in
trouble before, but I’ve never done anything like
this! I’ve got to convince them, or I might as well
kiss my life good-bye.
2.Second Person point of view employs the
pronoun “you” and “your”.
The narrator is not part of the story. He
puts the reader directly in action. This POV
directly addressing the reader with the pronoun
“you.”.
Example:
1. You should get up.
2. You should call your mother.
3. Third Person point of view uses pronouns
like “he”, “she” , “It”, “they” or a name of a
character.
The narrator is not part of the story. The
narrator is an observer who tells the story from
the outside.
Example:
Jonathan forgot to do his homework.
Percy Jackson is on the most dangerous quest of
his life.
3. Third Person point of view uses pronouns
like “he”, “she” , “It”, “they” or a name of a
character.

Example:
He used all his money to buy
Remember:
A good strategy to follow is to identify the
personal pronouns used in the text.
Personal pronouns, such as the first,
second, or third person often
—Someone Famous
determines the point of view used in a
narration.
So, if the
pronouns used in a narration
are in the third person, the point
of
view in that same text is also in
—Someone Famous

the third person.”

Directions: Read the situation and
identify whether it is written using
the
First, Second, or Third-Person
Point of View. Write your answers
in your notebook.
