The celebration of Día de las Velitas, also known
as 'Noche de Velitas', is one of the most
important festivals in Colombia. It is celebrated
every December 7. The date marks the beginning
of the Christmas festivities and illuminates the
streets of towns and cities throughout the
country.

What do we do on
candle day?

On Candle Day, families light candles in front of


their houses, place colored lanterns as
decorations and make wishes for the year that
is about to begin. Illuminated lanterns are also
hung in the windows, balconies and doors of
the houses.

Why is this day
celebrated?

Although the celebration has a religious origin,


the custom of lighting candles and hanging
lanterns on doors and windows was established
on the night of December 7 as a prelude to the
festival in honor of the Virgin Maria and the
new year that is about to begin.
