Research Methods on Linguistics (C)
LINGUISTICS
Here starts the
lesson!
1. What is linguistics?

Linguistics is the scientific study of language, encompassing various

aspects such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics,
and pragmatics. It involves the description of languages, the study of
their origin, and the analysis of how children acquire language and how
people learn languages other than their own. Linguistics also examines
relationships between languages and how they change over time.
2. What are the scope of linguistics?
The scope of linguistics has a very wide and diverse reach, encompassing different degrees of language
study and its applications in many domains.

Examples of the scope of linguistics include:

1. Phonetics: The study of how speech sounds are produced and perceived.
2. Phonology: The study of sound patterns and changes in a language.
3. Morphology: The study of word structure.
4. Syntax: The study of sentence structure.
5. Semantics: The study of linguistic meaning.
6. Pragmatics: The study of how language is used in context.
7. Stylistics: The study of the style and tone of written and verbal communication.
8. Applied Linguistics: The study of language in real-life application.
9. Computational Linguistics: The study of how computers can understand and process human language.
10. Sociolinguistics: The study of the impact and relation between society and language.
11. Psycholinguistics: The study of how humans acquire and use language.
12. Historical Linguistics: The study of the origins of languages and how they evolve and change.
Because linguistics is an
interdisciplinary field, it draws on
information from computer science,
anthropology, philosophy,
psychology, and sociology. It is a
dynamic field with many real-world
applications in disciplines like
sociology, anthropology, and
literature that changes and develops
with language.
