History and

Development
of Origami
HISTORY OF ORIGAMI
The technique of paper making
introduced into Japan by China during the
early seventh century, underwent considerable
changes in its manufacturing process in Japan,
giving rise to a type of ―washi paper
possessing dual qualities of resilient sturdiness
and softness which prevents tearing when it is
handled, Washi, a unique and distinct type
of Japanese paper kindled many forms of
cultural creativity, among them origami.
The Japanese word "origami" itself
is a compound of two smaller Japanese
words: "ori", meaning to fold, and "kami",
meaning paper. Until recently, all forms of
paper folding were not grouped under the
word origami.
• "Tsutsumi“- a kind of wrapper used for
formal occasions.
• Before that, paper folding for play was
known by a variety of names, including
"orikata", "orisue", "orimono",
"tatamigami" and others.
Initially, due to the fact that paper was
expensive, origami became an art form
practiced only by the elite and was used
for practical purposes such as folding
letters. Samurai would give each other
little paper good luck charms known as
“noshi” and Shinto weddings folded
paper butterflies.

KEY
PRINCIPLES IN
MAKING
ORIGAMI
Key principles of Origami
1. Square paper: Check
that the paper you are
folding is exactly a square.
Origami is typically done
with square pieces of
paper, which allows for
uniformity in the folding
process.
Key principles of Origami
2. No cutting: In traditional
origami, the paper is not
cut or torn, but only folded.
Key principles of Origami
3. No glue: Origami is
typically done without the
use of glue, relying instead
on the folds to hold the
shape of the figure.
Key principles of Origami
4. Symmetry: Many origami
designs rely on symmetry, with
folds and creases being made
along the center line to create
mirror images on both sides.
Symmetry: the quality of being made up of
exactly similar parts facing each other .
Key principles of Origami
5. Precision: Origami
requires precise folds and
creases, often requiring
patience and attention to
detail.
Is paper folding
helpful in making or
designing other art
projects?
Is it necessary for us
to follow the
procedure or can we
innovate or create
another way of
folding?

CHARACTERISTICS
OF QUALITY
ORIGAMI
PAPER CRAFT
Characteristics:
1. The paper is properly
folded and creased- it has
sharp and even folds. The
type of paper should also be
considered. A sturdier paper
can be used if we want it to
have it displayed or used
longer.
Characteristics:
2. Symmetry is important in
making Origami Product -
balanced proportion in terms
of size, forms, and colors.
Application in the elements of
arts and design of the project
must be followed.
Characteristics:
3. There are no extra bends
or folds in the paper - Extra
bends or folds alter the design
of the project and can make
the product defective. The
paper must be cut properly
and evenly to avoid extra
folds.
Characteristics:
4. Instructions in
folding are properly
followed - techniques
and methods are
very important in
achieving authentic,
quality, and
marketable products.
How can you describe
a quality Origami
product?
Why do we need to
make quality Origami
product?
Group Activity:
“As a craftsman, what criteria are you going
to follow in evaluating Origami
projects/products? Formulate criteria for
evaluating your product or project based on
the characteristics of a quality Origami
product.”

Direction: Each group must create their own scoring

rubrics of a quality Origami product.
TYPES OF ORIGAMI
Modular
Golden Venture Folding
Action
Wet Folding
Kirigami
Fabric Folding
Modular
Modular means "many" or "multiple".
This means that this type of origami, it
will use more than one piece of paper.
These pieces of paper are called "units".
Each unit is identical to the other for a
certain model. Modular origami is a way
to make three-dimensional origami.

Play video
Golden Venture
It is a type of modular origami. This type
of folding uses a certain type of unit. It can
be referred to as a "triangle unit" for its
shape. Depending on the model, it can take
up to hundreds of units to make the model.
3D swan One of the most well- known
models of the golden venture is the swan.
This model requires roughly about 400 to
450 units
Action
Action origami is the type of
origami that allows the finished
model to be interactable and be able
to do something. A common model
of the action origami is the "cootie
catcher" or "fortune teller".

Play video
Wet Folding
This type of origami is different
from the rest of ones mentioned
above. As you can see from the
title, the "wet" part indicates that
water is part of the process of
making the model. This allows for
the model to look softer and has
delicate curves and folds.
Kirigami
Origami is the art of folding paper.
However, Kirigami also includes
cutting paper. One very common
type of Kirigami is paper
snowflakes.
Fabric Folding
So besides paper, there we can fold
the fabric into something. A
common model of fabric folding
can be seen in restaurants, where
you can see folded swans
or sometimes a fabric case for the
utensils.

PACKAGING
OF FINISHED
PRODUCT/
PROJECT
We often consider the products
we use and their packaging to be
two separate things – the product
is the thing we want, and its
packaging is a piece of trash to
be thrown away.
Good design isn’t just about the
product – it’s about good
packaging as well. Some of the
other packaging, while not exactly
useful, is still helpful and stylish. It
makes their product just a bit
more fun to use. It doesn’t always
have to be about function.
Purposes of
Packaging
What is the purpose of
packaging?
Protection
for the product: transportation
without spoiling and/or
breaking for the consumer:
reduces worry and increases
safety
Convenience
ease of use and decision
making, simplifies life
Image
shelf-appeal, brand awareness,
and
product/company/consumer
values
Sustainability
reduction of environmental
impact, consumers can make a
difference
PACKAGING
MATERIALs
Carton Box
A light box or container
usually made of
cardboard or plastic
Cellophane
A transparent sheet that is
used for wrapping or
packing.
Packing Tape
A transparent adhesive to
wrap around the box.
Bubble Wrap
Pliable transparent plastic
material used to pack
fragile materials.
String or Cord
Composed of a strand of
fibers or plastic that is
usually composed by
bundles.
Marking Pen
They are permanent markers,
making an ideal partner for
high-volume marking and
labelling since they write on
almost all surfaces including
vinyl adhesive tape,
cardboard, metal, glass and
plastic.
Why is creativity and
appropriateness of
selecting materials in
making packaging
important?
Creative packaging designs
are bound to attract
consumers’ attention.
For a packaging design to be
considered good, it should not only
look fantastic but also should clearly
project the message the manufacturer
wants to convey so the consumers can
get it
