"TEXTILE WASTE CURRENTLY

PRODUCING AN ENVIRONMENTAL
CRISIS"

Today the textile industry is a giant that pollutes and
consumes many raw materials such as energy, water and
soil, among others. Currently, fast, cheap and low-quality
fashion constantly increases the environmental impact of
the textile industry, generating a lot of textile waste that is
incinerated or recycled.

According to the United Nations conference on Trade and

Development, the textile industry is the second most
polluting in the world, due to the multiple environmental
and health impacts it generates. It is an industry that
produces up to 10% of total carbon emissions. Water is the
environmental resource most harmed by this industry,
which is responsible for 20% of the total loss of such
resource. Approximately 50 million tons of natural fibers are
consumed, which also use water in their dyeing process.
Textile waste contributes to an environmental crisis in
several ways:
 Water and Soil Pollution: During the production of textiles,
numerous chemicals are used in the processes of dyeing and
finishing machines. These chemicals often end up in the
water, contaminating nearby rivers and bodies of water.

 Consumption of Natural Resources: The production of

textiles requires large amounts of water, energy and natural
resources. From growing cotton to manufacturing synthetic
materials, the process can be resource intensive and
contribute to environmental degradation.

 Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Textile manufacturing and

associated waste management generate greenhouse gas
emissions and these gases contribute to climate change and
its associated impacts, such as rising temperatures and
extreme weather events.
The environmental impact in Peru is evident because it is one of the first exporting
countries of plant fibers, such as cotton, whose cultivation consumes the few water
sources on the Peruvian coast. The Peruvian textile industry, which should be most
interested in sustainability, does not seem to care too much about this situation;
however, some Peruvian companies, such as Industria Textil del Pacífico and Textil
del Valle, are committed to more sustainable production, ethical, social and
protective of the environment. They participate in the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol,
which seeks to change the paradigm of cotton production to make it more planet-
friendly. This not only reduces negative impacts on the environment, but also
generates positive reputational value for the products of these brands among
international consumers.
Tips for pollution reduction:

 Avoid fast fashion (fast, cheap and low quality fashion).

 Buy clothes made from sustainable materials, such as
organic cotton or biodegradable polyester.
 Wear clothes longer, the more the better. Buy and sell
second-hand clothes.
 Make alterations to clothing when necessary.
 Buy clothes made with recycled material.
 Put clothes in appropriate containers when you have to get
rid of them.
 Reduce the presence of accessories such as zippers or
buttons.
 Choose undyed garments.
 Wash at low temperature (30°C) or cold water
