Case Study

Derrick Brown
Director of Property Management
Jamestown is a 40+ Year Old Global Design Focused,
Real Estate Investment and Management Firm
Why did you feel it was important to have a specific written culture/values for your team?

“In 2020 when our world was

catapulted into an unfamiliar and
unknow place, we felt it necessary to
find ways to continue to bring our
team together and ensure they felt
supported. I realized that engaging
John to help us establish a written
culture book could be a great
replacement for our annual.
management retreat.”
How did you select the core values, and behaviors and what made
them unique to your team?

“John did an amazing job, virtually I might

add, conducting a series of workshops which
gave all of our managers a voice. The
workshops allowed each team member an
opportunity to express what they felt our
values were.
Through what felt like a very comfortable
and collaborative process we arrived at our
values:
“We Wow”, “We Partner”, “We Outperform”.
This tied in nicely with a quote by
Danny Meyer I like “Business like life, is all
about how you make people feel.”
What did you do to launch and train people on the culture/values?

“As we onboard new hires, on their very first day,

we provide them with a copy of our “Guide to
Wow” and explain how the team developed this
book and how we aim to live by the values in
everything we do. For our tenured team, we
regularly refer back to and recognize team
members to include our extended teams of third-
party service providers for exhibiting behaviors
that surprise and delight. When I’m interviewing
candidates, I talk about our culture and values and
look for those inherent traits of hospitality which
provides a foundation for easily fitting into and
believing in our culture.”
What do you feel the benefits are of working on culture/values and would you recommend it to others?

“I cannot stress enough how

impactful and important creating our
culture book has been in setting the
road map for us. It has provided us
with a feeling of unity, confidence,
and clear direction and I highly
recommend others to take this
journey with John and his team and
create your own culture book.”
“You Can’t Possibly Write All The
Scenarios in a Manual.
You Have to be a Values-Based
Organization.”
