Florence Nightingale’s Role In
Nursing Informatics
Despite her lack of a formal educational program, some might say
that Florence Nightingale was the first informatics nurse specialist,
given that the fundamental building block in informatics is data.

Recognizing the value of data in affecting healthcare, she collected

data and systematized recordkeeping practices in Crimea.

Using these data, she developed the first version of the pie graph to
dramatize the need for reform to stop the needless deaths caused by
the unsanitary conditions in military hospitals.

When decisions are based on the data available, collection and analysis of
nursing data become very important.
