VOCAL FORMS
OF AFRICAN
MUSIC!
Maracatu, Blues, Soul, Spiritual, Call and Response
MARACATU
Maracatu, a traditional Afro-Brazilian music style, brings together
the sweet sounds of Portuguese melodies with the infectious
rhythm of African drumming. These large ensembles, known as
nações, can have over 100 performers who fill the streets with their
music. Singers, a chorus, and even dancers join the vibrant
procession, creating a truly immersive experience.

Maracatu first surfaced in the African state of Pernambuco,

combining the strong rhythms of African percussion instruments
with Portuguese melodies. The maracatu groups were called
"nacoes" (nations) who paraded with a drumming ensemble
numbering up to 100, accompanied by a singer, chorus, and a
coterie of dancers

CALL AND RESPONSE
In Sub-Saharan African cultures, call and response is a
pervasive pattern of democratic participation—in public
gatherings in the discussion of civic affairs, in religious rituals,
as well as in vocal and instrumental musical expression

In music, call and response is a compositional

technique, often a succession of two distinct phrases
that works like a conversation in music. One musician
offers a phrase, and a second player answers with a
direct commentary or response.
