PARADOX: Metaphor  love is a free bird
freedom in Free, no limitations
imprisonment

When Love with unconfinéd wings

Floats, flies
Hovers within my gates,

And my divine Althea brings

Heavenly, celestial
To whisper at the grates;
Twisted together When I lie tangled in her hair
Tied or chained
And fetter’d to her eye,

The Gods that wanton in the air

Fly freely
Know no such liberty.
Freedom
Over-indulging in wine
& alcohol Diluting

When flowing cups run swiftly round

Worry-free
With no allaying Thames, Metonymy
Thames
Our careless heads with roses crown’d, represents
England &
Metaphor Our hearts with loyal flames; English politics

Transferred Epithet When thirsty grief in wine we steep, Metonymy 

rose is
Soak When healths and draughts go free— synonymous
with England
Fishes that tipple in the deep
Act of drinking
Drink
excessively
Know no such liberty.
Songbird
SIMILE Caged

High-pitched,
piercing When, like committed linnets, I

Alliteration With shriller throat shall sing

The sweetness, mercy, majesty

Powerful And glories of my King;

Hold back, divert
When I shall voice aloud how good

He is, how great should be,

Enlargéd winds, that curl the flood,

Know no such liberty.

REPETITION  REFRAIN

Stone walls do not a prison make,

Not all prisons are physical
Nor iron bars a cage;

Minds innocent and quiet take

That for an hermitage:

Retreat, refuge,
If I have freedom in my love haven

And in my soul am free,

Angels alone, that soar above,

Enjoy such liberty.
