Introduction

• Inter disciplinary curriculum refers to discussing a core

theme, problem or a topic from the point of view of
different subject disciplines.
• Inter disciplinary approach does not compartmentalize
knowledge as a seperate discipline but integrate them
so as to develop a holistic point of view on anything.
Inter disciplinary curriculum
According to meeth
Inter disciplinary approach emphasizes finding relationship between
disciplines.
Inter disciplinary approach encourages developing different perspectives,
particularly adopting alternative methods in studying problem faces in life.
• In brief inter disciplinary approach is studying and analyzing any concept,
topic or problem from different disciplines.
• As problems of the present day modern world are not confined to a single
subject discipline.
• To find solution for them, experts from different subject disciplines need
to work together.
• To facilitate this the curriculum of school or higher education should be
framed following the inter disciplinary approach.
• For eg for the topic eye
• It’s structure, defects in eye Sight and the methods of rectifying them and
conserving eye Sight by strengthening the relevant muscles may be
integrated and included in the curriculum.
Growing Need for Inter Disciplinary
curriculum
• The need for following the inter disciplinary approach in education is
increasing day by day.
• It is necessary to adopt the inter disciplinary approach in designing the
curriculum.
• The world we live is well integrated into a unity
• The world and it’s problems can be viewed from different angle.
• When the curriculum is framed on the basis of disciplines, knowledge is
partitioned and they appear as isolated islands.
• It makes difficult for the students to develop an integrated outlook about
any concept or problem.
• So it is necessary to develop and use inter disciplinary curriculum to make
the students understand fully the world and the problems in it.
• The present method of curriculum development was born out of European
traditions. It was designed to groom students with high academic
proficiency.
• In the present day context we need a broad based curriculum. All
categories of students should develop the ability to face and solve the
problems of life.
• Traditional curriculum cannot meet this challenge.
• In addition to the traditional areas of study, it has become necessary to add
quite areas of study like environmental education, education and work,
education and peace etc
• These new subjects are essentially inter disciplinary in nature.
• To develop in students the ability to solve the problem of life, employing
inter disciplinary approach in curriculum construction is essential.
Conclusion
• Linking science and technology education with productive work will
enable the students to develop positive attitudes to work, ability to cope
up with the problems of life and fulfill the needs of the community.
• Teaching of science and technology should be suitably integrated with the
teaching of social sciences.
