Introduction
• WHAT IS COTTON?
• The cotton that you are familiar with grows naturally in warmer climates around the globe. It
belongs to the genus Gossypium, and as a natural material is primarily made from cellulose,
the material which all plants are made from.
• Cotton fiber from the field is composed of 87% to 90% cellulose and 5% to 8% water, the
remainder being natural impurities. The cellulose content increases with fiber maturity.
• Large proportions of immature cotton fibers can result in various types of problems in
textiles. The moisture content of cotton varies depending on storage conditions, and the
amounts and types of impurities vary depending on growth region, fertilizer, and variety.
Ginning of Cotton
• The purpose of the cotton gin is to mechanically separate the cotton fiber from the
seed. Ginning is also used to remove non-cotton materials from the lint. If done too
aggressively, ginning can increase the short-fiber content within a bale. After ginning,
the fibers are compressed into cotton bales weighing from 480 to 500 pounds (210 to
220 kilograms). The bales are then shipped to textile mills, where they are spun into
yarns for fabrication or shipped to non-woven textile facilities for web formation.
Structure
Longitudinal structure of cotton consists of base, body and tip.
1. Base: Short fragile, coned type portion which remains constant in the epidermal of seed
during growth of fiber.
2. Body: Main portion of cotton fiber and about 75% of total length.
3. Tip: Straight narrow portion at the end of fibers and about 25% of total length.

1) Soft Handle:
• Cotton fiber, if properly ginned, gives the best soft handle feeling among all other fibers. This
property is instrumental in fiber identification.
1) Absorbent:
• Cotton fiber has high absorbency power and this is why this fiber can be died properly and
without any problem or difficulty. It absorbs perspiration quickly which is its highly
esteemed property. As the body perspires, cotton fibers absorb the moisture and release it on
the surface of the fabric, so it evaporates.
• Good Strength:
• Cotton fiber is a moderately strong fiber. Its strength along its other properties makes it ideal
for wear. Cotton fiber is also very durable.
• Draping:
• The drape-ability of cotton fiber is quite good. You can use the cotton fiber made fabric in
any kind of wear which needs more flexibility and drapes.
• Sewing & Handling Is Easy:
• The sewing efficiency on Cotton made fabric is easier and comfortable than other fiber.
Cotton is very easy in handling.
• Breathability:
• Fabric made from cotton fiber has very high air permeability which makes it highly
breathable fabric. It has a distinctive feature that it adjusts easily with climatic
requirements. That is why it is called all-Season fabric. In summer season, cotton fabric
keeps the body cool and absorbs the sweat easily. As the body perspires, cotton fibers absorb

Bast Fibers )(Flax
• Flax claimed to be the first fiber used for making textile,
which is commonly known as linen. Linen mummy-cloth
was used about 4,500 years ago.
structure
• Fiber morphology:
• For the longest and the best flax this tends to about 15000:1.
• The color of flax varies from light blond to grey blond, the particular shade resulting from
the agricultural and climatic conditions under which it was grown and quality of retting.
• The subdued luster of flax is due to its long regular fiber surface, which is coated with a
film of wax.
• This enables a significant amount of the incident light to be reflected, resulting in the
subdued luster.
Microscopic appearance of flax:
The Polymer System:
• The flax polymer differs from the cotton polymer physically in that it has a degree of
polymerization of about 18000, means the flax polymer is made of about 18000 cellobiose
units.
• It is 18000 nm long, and about 0.8 nm thick.
• The polymer system of flax is more crystalline than that of cotton, because of its longer
polymers, spiral about each other at approx 6º to the fiber axis, thereby contributing
towards the tenacity and durability of the fiber.
• Due to greater crystallinity, the flax fibers are stronger, crisper and stiffer to handle, and textile
How Is Linen Fabric Made?
•1. Planting
•Flax plants are ready for harvesting after about 100 days of growth. Since flax plants do not tolerate heat, they must be planted in
the cooler part of the year to avoid crop death.
•2. Growth
•These days, flax seeds are usually sown with machines. Since flax plants don’t effectively prevent the incursion of weeds,
herbicides and tilling are generally used to prevent reduced yields in flax crops.
•3. Harvesting
•Once flax stems are yellow and their seeds are brown, these plants are ready to be harvested. While it’s possible to harvest flax by
hand, machines are usually used for this process.
