Bratwurst

Bratwurst is a type of spiced sausage


that is sometimes smoked.

The sausages are usually made from


pork but sometimes they are made
from beef or veal.

Maultaschen are pockets of pasta


stuffed with a blend of meat,
breadcrumbs, onions, spinach and
spices.

The dish is often described as


German ravioli.

Maultaschen can be served in several


ways, such as in a broth or fried with
butter and onions.

Kartoffelsalat

Kartoffelsalat (potato salad) is made


of boiled potatoes mixed with
onions, chives or parsley, vinegar,
mustard and oil.

There are many varieties of this dish


where people choose to add other
ingredients, such as bacon,
mayonnaise and pickles.
Bouletten

Bouletten (or Buletten) are a popular


street food in Germany.

These meatballs are made from


ground pork or beef and are not
usually put inside a bun like
hamburgers.

Bouletten are eaten with a variety of


sauces and with salad or vegetables.
Brezeln

Brezeln are a baked bread made from


dough and usually shaped into a
knot.

They are known as pretzels


elsewhere.

Toppings include salt, sugar and


different seeds, like sesame and
poppy seeds.
Stollen

Stolen is a traditional German fruit


bread.

It contains raisins and butter and


sometimes marzipan.

The fruit bread is often eaten around


Christmastime.

It can also be called Christstollen,


Weihnachtsstollen and Winterbrot.
Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte

Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte is also


known as Black Forest cake or Black
Forest gateau.

It is a chocolate cake which has a


rich filling of cream and cherries.

Traditionally, the cake can have a


pastry base and is decorated with
more cream, cherries and chocolate
shavings.
Apfelstrudel

Apfelstrudel (apple strudel) is a


sweet dish of flaky pastry filled with
apples, cinnamon and raisins.

Some bakers may choose to put nuts


in their recipe too.

People enjoy eating this dish with


cream or ice cream.
