WHAT IS PHONEME?
A phoneme is a speech sound within a word.
The smallest unit of sound in speech.

To hear the phonemes in a word, one must

break the word up into its sounds. This is
called segmenting.
Phoneme segmentation is the ability to break words down into
individual sounds.
For examples:
“FUN”

/f/ /u/ /n/

“LOOK”

/l/ /u/ /k/

 In the English language, phonemes are classified as vowel or
consonant. One difficulty for non-native English speakers is
pronouncing the voiced and unvoiced consonants.
 Voiced sounds have a vibration of the vocal cords, which are located
in your throat.
 /z/, while pronouncing it touch your throat by using your hand.
Do you feel the vibration?
 Try pronouncing this sound:/s/.

 Some consonant sounds are voiceless and does not have the
vibration of the vocal cords.

 In producing voiced and unvoiced consonants the placement of the

vocal apparatus is the same but differs in the manner of
articulation. To produce the proper sound of these phonemes
properly, the vocal apparatus should be in the correct position.

LONG AND SHORT VOWEL

 There is a great difference in how Filipinos and

Americans pronounce vowels. In Filipino, we read
the vowels as it is but in the English language, they
have 3 classifications of the vowel sound. These are
short vowels, long vowels and diphthongs.
DIPHTHONGS

 The word "diphthong" came from the Greek word

diphthongos that means "two voices" or "two
sounds.“
 Diphthongs are also referred to as gliding vowels
because sounds are made by combining two vowels
by moving from one vowel sound to another.
 Generally, there are eighth (8) diphthongs but it depends on which expert you ask.
Below are the 8 diphthongs represented by its phonetic symbol.
