Introduction:
Artificial Intelligence(AI) is the intelligence of
machines or software. It is the field of study in
computer science that develops and studies
intelligent machines. Such machines may be
called as AIs.
AI Technology:
1. AI technology is widely used throughout industry, government, and science.
2. Some high profile applications are
• Advanced web search engines Eg: Google search
• Recommendation systems Eg: Youtube, amazon & Netflix
• Interacting via human speech Eg: Google assistant, Siri, and Alexa
• Generative and creative Eg: ChatGPT, and AI art
• Self driving cars Eg: Waymo

For medical research, AI is an important tool for processing and integrating. Artificial
intelligence in pharmacy is the application of artificial intelligence to the discovery,
development, and the treatment of patients with medications.
AI in pharmacy & healthcare sector
• AI has the potential to significantly improve medication management and patient care.
• By using AI algorithms and machine learning , pharmacists can analyse a large volume of patient
data, including medical records, laboratory results and medication profiles, aiding them in
identifying potential drug-drug interactions, assessing safety efficacy of medicines
• Various AI models have been developed to predict and detect adverse effects, assist clinical
decision support systems with medication related decision, automated dispensing process,
optimization of medication dosages, detect drug-drug interactions, improve adherence through
smart technologies, detect and prevent medication errors, provide medication therapy management
services.
• By incur[orating AI into clinical practice, health care professionals can augment their decision
making processes and provide patients with personalised care.
• For patients, AI may be a useful tool for providing guidance on how and when to take a
medication, aiding in patient education and promoting medication adherence.

Pharmaceutical product management
Artificial intelligence product management involves the design, organization, and release of products
and services that implement artificial intelligence and machine learning to address the customer’s
needs.
AI in Quality control & Quality assurance
AI in quality assurance:
1. Defect detection: AI can be used to identify and classify defects in manufactured products, such
as scratches, dents, or cracks. This can be done by analysing images or videos of the products or by
the sensors to measure physical characteristics such as size, shape or weight.
2. Anamoly detection: AI can be used to identify anamolies in the manufacturing process, such as
deviations from standard operating procedures or unexpected changes in product quality.
3. Predictive maintenance: AI can be used to predict when equipment is likely to fail, based on
historical data and real time monitoring. This information can be used to schedule maintenance and
repairs before problem occurs.
4. Process optimization: AI can be used to optimize the manufacturing process by identifying
inefficiencies and bottlenecks.
AI in Quality control and Quality assurance
AI in Quality control:
1. Improved product quality: AI can help to identify and eliminate defects in their products,
leading to improved quality and customer satisfaction.
2. Reduced costs: AI can help to reduce costs by identifying inefficiencies and bottlenecks in the
manufacturing process and by predicting when the equipment is likely to fail.
3. Increased productivity: AI can help to increase the productivity by automating the quality
control process and by identifying opportunities for improvement.
4. Improved safety: AI can help to improve safety by identifying potential hazards and by
predicting when equipment is likely to fail.
AI in pharmaceutical manufacturing
In the manufacturing the whole process consist of the following unit operations:
1. Formulation and pre- formulation development
2. Powder feeding in continuous manufacturing
3. Mixing active pharmaceutical ingredients with excipients
4. Milling or granulating
5. Hot melt extrusion
6. Compressing the powder blend to form tablets or capsules
7. Packaging and labelling pharmaceuticals for distribution
Tools of AI
A large number of AI tools have been created to meet the current need of pharmaceutical industry.
These tools have shown promising outcomes. Some of the tools have gained popularity in
pharmaceutical sector have been described below:
1. IBM Watson for oncology:
Watson for oncology has been designed to assist oncologists in taking better decisions for the
treatment of cancer.
2. Robot pharmacy:
This technology has prepared 3,50,000 medication doses without any error. The robot has
proved to be far better than humans in both size as well as its abilities to deliver accurate medications.
3. MEDi robot:
it is the short form of medicine and engineering intelligence. The robot was initially
developed for pain management.
Tools for AI
4. Erica robot:
Erica is the new care robot that has been developed in Japan. It was developed in
collaboration with the Japan science and technology agency. Its same as the normal human being also
with human like facial expressions.
5. TUG robot:
TUG robots are designed to autonomously travel through the hospital and deliver
medications, meals, specimens, materials and haul carry heavy loads such as linen and trash.
6. Berg:
Berg is the Boston based biotech and is one of the key players employing AI in its various
processes. It has AI based platform for drug discovery, which has a huge database of patients and this
used to find as well as validate the various biomarkers responsible for causing diseases.
Advantages
 Error reduction
 Difficult exploration
 Increase technological growth rate
 Effective and quick diagnosis
 Accurate diagnosis
 Medication adherence monitoring
 Helps in data analysis
 Can store many information
 Maintain records
 Efficient process of diagnosis
Disadvantages
 Data security concern
 Initial cost is high
 Ethical issues
 Technical challenges
 Overreliance on technology
 Potential for increased unemployment
 May be incorrect
 No ethics or emotions
 Lack of improvement in human creativity
 Possibility of errors
Conclusion
The integration of AI in pharmacy holds great
promise for enhancing efficiency, accuracy
and personalized patient care. From drug
discovery to medication management, AI
technologies have the potential to
revolutionise the pharmaceutical industry.
However AI is used as a tool rather than
replace human expertise in the pharmacy
field.
