METHODS OF SPEED CONTROL OF INDUCTION MOTORS

 Stator voltage control

 Stator frequency control
 Stator current control
 v/f control
 Static rotor resistance control
VARIABLE FREQUENCY CONTROL

 This method is used to control the speed of an induction motor.

 The synchronous speed and speed of the motor can be controlled by varying the
supply frequency.
 The synchronous speed of an induction motor is given by the relation shown
below
f= frequency and p= number of poles
VARIABLE FREQUENCY
CONTROL
 The EMF induced in the stator of the induction motor is given by the equation

 if the supply frequency is changed, induced EMF will also change to maintain the same air gap flux.

 The terminal voltage V is equal to the induced EMF E if the stator voltage drop is neglected.
1 1

 To minimize the losses and to avoid saturation, the motor is operated at rated air gap flux.
VARIABLE FREQUENCY CONTROL
 This condition is obtained by varying the terminal voltage with frequency

 To maintain the (V/f) ratio constant at the rated value. This type of control is known as Constant
Volts Per Hertz.

 Speed control of an induction motor using a variable-frequency supply requires a variable voltage
power source.
VARIABLE FREQUENCY CONTROL

 This method is not widely used. This method is used where , only
the induction motor is supplied by a generator.

 By changing the frequency we can control the speed above and

below the rated speed.

 It offers high range of speed control.
