Pythagorean Theorem
- one of the earliest theorems known to ancient
civilizations and one of the most famous theorems in
geometry with more than 100 different proofs at this
time.
- named after the Greek mathematician
and philosopher, Pythagoras.

Pythagorean Theorem
- a statement about right triangles.

States:
“the square of the length of the
hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the
squares of the length of the legs”
Formula: 𝟐 𝟐 𝟐
𝒄 =𝒂 +𝒃
where c is the hypotenuse and
a and b are the legs.
Area of Square C =
Area of Square A =
Area of Square B =
EXAMPLE 1
Which of the following are the lengths of
the sides of the triangle?
a. 2, 3, 4
b. 7, 24, 25
a. 2, 3, 4
Solution: 2 2 2
𝑐 = 𝑎 +𝑏
2 2 2
4 =2 +3
16 = 4 + 9
16 = 13
Therefore, 2, 3, 4 are NOT sides of the triangle.
b. 7, 24, 25
Solution: 2 2 2
𝑐 = 𝑎 +𝑏
2 2 2
25 =7 + 24
625 = 49 + 576
625 = 625
Therefore, 7, 24, 25 are sides of the triangle.
c. 5, 12, 13
Solution: 2 2 2
𝑐 = 𝑎 +𝑏
2 2 2
13 =5 +12
169 = 25 + 144
169 = 169
Therefore, 5, 12, 13 are sides of the triangle.
Find the length of a side
of a right triangle
using Pythagorean
Theorem.
3 steps
Step 1: Identify the legs and the hypotenuse of the
right triangle.
Step 2: Substitute the variables by the given values
into the formula (remember ‘c’ is the length of the
hypotenuse).
Step 3: Solve for the unknown.
Example 1
a. (Solving for the length of the hypotenuse) Use the
Pythagorean Theorem to determine the value of 𝑥.
STEP 1
a = 6 cm
b = 8 cm
c=x

STEP 2
STEP 3

x = 10

Therefore, the length of the hypotenuse of the right triangle is

10 cm.
b. (Solving for length of the leg) Use the Pythagorean
Theorem to determine the value of x.
STEP 1
a=x
b = 24 cm
c = 26 cm

STEP 2
STEP 3
2 2 2
26 = 𝑥 + 24
=
676 - 576

10 = x

Therefore, the length of the hypotenuse of the right triangle is

10 cm.
Examples
Given the two sides of a right triangle ABC
with right angle at C, find the length of the A
third side.

STEP 1
B a=5
b = 12
c=x
STEP 2

STEP 3 2 2 2
𝑥 =5 +1 2
2
𝑥 =25 + 144
√𝑥 2
=√ 169
x = 13 Therefore, the length of the
third side is 13.
A
STEP 1
b.
a = 10 cm
20 b=x
x
c = 20 cm
STEP 2
B 10 C
STEP 3 2 2 2
20 =10 + 𝑏
2
400= 100+ 𝑥
2
400 − 100= 𝑥
√ 300=√ 𝑥 2

10= x

Therefore, the length of the third side is 10 .

Try This
(Solving for the length of the hypotenuse) Use the
Pythagorean Theorem to determine the value of
𝑥.
STEP 1
a = 9 cm
b = 12 cm
c=x
STEP 2
STEP 3 2 2 2
𝑥 =9 + 12
2
𝑥 =81 +144
√𝑥 2
=√ 225
x = 15

Therefore, the length of the third side is 15.
