1 We use there is/there are to talk about things that exist or don’t exist
somewhere.
Singular Plural

Positive There’s a park. There are cafés.


(There is a park.)
Negative There isn’t a cinema. There aren’t any banks.
(There is not a cinema.) (There are not any banks.)

2 We do not use contractions in plural positive sentences. NOT There’re some


buses.

3 We use any before plural nouns in negative sentences.

4 If the first thing on the list of nouns is a singular noun, we use the singular

There is a gym and three cafés. BUT There are three cafés and a gym.
