OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, the students should be


able to:

a. learn about the purpose of classroom


assessment ;
b. differentiate the assessment of, for, and as
learning; and
c. identify the examples of different kinds of

In classrooms, teachers are expected to
know the instructional goals and learning
outcomes, which will inform how they will
design and implement their assessment. In
general, the purpose of classroom
assessment may be classified in terms of
the following:

1. ASSESSMENT OF
LEARNING (summative
assessment)

This refers to the use of assessment to


determine learners' acquired knowledge
and skills from instruction and whether
they were able to achieve the
curriculum outcomes. It is generally
summative in nature.

Examples of summative assessments include:

• a midterm exam

• a final project

• a recital

• This refers to the use of assessment to
identify the needs of learners in order to
modify instruction or learning activities
in the classroom.

• It is formative in nature and it is meant


to identify gaps in the learning
experiences of learners so that they can
be assisted in achieving the curriculum
outcomes.

• The goal of formative assessment is to


monitor student learning to provide
ongoing feedback that can be used by
instructors to improve their teaching
and by students to improve their
learning.

include asking students to:

• draw a concept map in class to


represent their understanding of a topic
• make the learner identify the main point
of a lecture

help learners become self-regulated. It
is formative in nature and meant to use
assessment tasks, results, and feedback
to help learners practice self- regulation
and make adjustments to achieve the
curriculum outcomes.

• Learner takes responsibility for their


own learning and asks questions about
their learning and the learning process
and explores how to improve.

about the content and then quiz each
other. They would also spend time going
through the incorrect answers with each
other to heighten their understanding.
