What is PLAYWRITING?

• Playwriting is the art of writing a script for a play or


drama.
FOUR MAIN TYPES OF PLAY:

1. DRAMA

2. COMEDY

3. HISTORICAL

4. MUSICAL
Elements of PLAY:

1. PLOT – The arrangement of events or incidents on


the stage.

2. CHARACTER – The agents of the plot.

3. THEME – The reason the playwright wrote the play.

4. LANGUAGE – “Vivid characters” (6) facing and


overcoming recognizable obstacles need to express
themselves in “heightened language.
What is DRAMATURGY?

• Dramaturgy is the study of dramatic composition and the


representation of the main elements of drama on the stage.
Two Types of Dramaturgy:

1. New play dramaturgy

- is the development of a play that a playwright is


working on, sometimes starting at the very
beginning of an idea. Often a playwright-
dramaturg team will create a list of goals for the
play.
Two Types of Dramaturgy:

2. Production dramaturgy-

is providing context to a play that has already been


published or produced. This is the more common
type of dramaturgy, which is often the form done
in a classroom setting.

• Scenic design is the creation of theatrical, as well as film or


television scenery.
