Having a voice- pt 2
3 THINGS
YOU HAVE
ACHIEVED
THIS WEEK.
Having a voice at school
• This week we would like to look at what is happening at school. We have recently
had a school review, lots of staff and students got to have a voice. Did you?
• In the School Review students raised the issue of the state of the toilets with the
Reviewers.
• In the last week student access to all toilets had to be limited due to repeated
damage
• Sadly, toilets in schools have been an issue for decades.
School Toilet research- what do you think?
Research, conducted by YouGov on 1,522, 11-16-year-old school pupils across Britain, found:
• Over one in five (22%) of school children surveyed – equivalent to 654,072 children – have avoided
drinking during school in order to avoid having to use the toilets
• Almost one in ten (9%) of school children surveyed have avoided eating during the school day to
avoid having to use the toilets
• Of those pupils who avoid eating or drinking, almost one in four (23%) do it at least once a day
• Of the pupils who avoid using school toilets, 52% said this is because the toilets are dirty, while 19%
described them as unsafe, 17% as faulty and 12% said they lacked toilet roll or handwash.
• Discuss
The issues with SBSHS Toilets- examples
The facts
• This damage is just a small example of the damage that has been caused this year.
• It has cost the school so far, in excess of $20 000 to repair the damage - replace partitions,
soap dispensers, toilet roll holders, clear blocked drains, remove graffiti
• At least three toilet roll holders per day were being damaged across the school with over 30
rolls of toilet paper being thrown on the floor, stuffed down toilets
• When the system in one section of the Hilton toilets is blocked it effects the whole system in
the block
• The damage has been caused by a small number of students, but effects all students and staff
What can YOU do?
• The resources, facilities and grounds of SBSHS are the responsibility of ALL.
• How can we ensure that facilities such as the toilets are used appropriately, treated respectfully and
are available for use for every one all the time?
• Discuss three practical and appropriate ways we can ensure that the toilets are kept clean, graffiti
free, in good working order and safe for all students to use. Your solutions might consider, how do
we report and hold accountable those responsible for damaging school property, how to safely
report vaping, graffiti or vandalism, use of Stymie? Then fill out the What can YOU do? Word
doc emailed to you.
• Share these ideas with the class and your teacher will summarise and pass them on to
Administration. Thank you for your help to resolve this important issue.
• Let’s flush out a solution and wipe the slate clean! Have a super week! 
