Chapter 5 Summary of Findings, Conclusions, and Recommendations This study attempted to seek answers to the following questions: 1.

what are the common barriers that affect the students in improving the environment? 2. How do these barriers affect the environment? 3. What actions can be done to eradicate these barriers that affect the students in improving the environment? This study used quantitative method to determine the number of barriers as well as the percentage of students in Bicol University College of Arts and Letters who gave their response for each item in the survey conducted by the researchers. The researchers made use of a test/ questionnaires in validating the barriers to fully understand what hinders them to improve the environment and what must be done to recover it. Also, the data gathered were analyzed so that the researchers would come up with a resolution which would give more clarity to this research. This process was able to draw out the activities that must be conducted that would lead to the greater awareness of the students. Summary of Findings The process of surveying and interpreting of the common barriers that affects the students in improving the environment in Bicol University College of Arts and Letters has come up with the following findings: 1. There are five (5) common barriers that the survey revealed: 1. Lack of Implementation or Policies; 2. Lack of Trash cans; 3. Lack of Awareness ; 4. Laziness; 5. Irresponsibility 1a. Out of these five (5) common barriers Lack of implementation or policies was rated as the top barrier which garnered a total of , followed by Lack of trash cans with checks, Lack of awareness with checks, Laziness with checks and lastly Irresponsibility with the lowest check of 2. There are three (3) effects in the environment the study revealed: 1. Clogged drainage canals which results to flooding when storm strikes; 2. Unpleasant/ unwanted smell and trash everywhere; 3. No policy, no respect to environment; 3. Seven (7) actions was drawn out from the survey: 1. Conduct seminars and symposiums about Solid waste management; 2. Put life to 3 Rs and 1 S Reduce, Re use, Recycle, Segregate; 3. Put trash cans in every classrooms; 4. Do earthly and friendly activities; 5. Do activities which would promote the betterment of the environment; 6. Implement proper rules and policies.7. Join community service Survey Questions: 1. Three (3) options for the question Do you follow the rules that would help you improve your environment?: 1. Yes (); 2. No (); 3. Sometimes ()

2. There are three (3) options to those who said Yes regarding the things that you always do to improve your environment: 1. Throw the garbage properly (); 2. Joining community service/ planting trees (); 3. Conserve energy/ water (). 3. Three (3) options were given to those who said No regarding the things which prevents them from doing it so: 1. Lack of trash cans (); 2. Lack of awareness (); 3. Laziness () 4. Three (3) options regarding the actions of students whenever there is a garbage in the classroom: 1. Put it on the trash can (); 2. Throw it or kick it on the other side (); 3. Do not care at all () Conclusions Based on the aforementioned findings, the following conclusions are drawn: 1. The survey in Bicol University College of Arts and Letters about the barriers in improving the environment includes lack of implementation or policies, lack of trash cans, lack of awareness, laziness and irresponsibility. 2. The barriers according to the students do not only affect the environment but the students also. It brings countless consequences to everyone. 3. These barriers could be minimized if and only if LGUs, Schools etc would conduct actions for the betterment of the environment; such actions include supporting the 3 Rs and 1 S and conducting seminars. Survey: 1. The survey shows all students are aware of the rules in improving the environment and it shows that out of fifty (50) students, --agreed on-- which implies that students are active or more inclined in doing it. It also reflects that lack of trash cans hinders the student to follow the proper way of disposing the garbage which can be said that it is the concern of the college to put trash cans for each classroom. Recommendations/ Suggestions On the basis of the above conclusions, this study supports the following recommendations: Conduct seminars about Solid Waste Management to establish the proper way of disposing wastes to awaken the awareness of the students and residents of Albay. Introduce the students to 3 Rs and 1 S for them to fully understand the help it could bring in the school as well as to the community. Promote advocacies to strengthen the aim of the people and to make ways for more improvements. Make sure to put trash cans for each classroom to prevent garbage from littering around and to avoid unpleasant odor which can affect students and discussion in the classrooms. Do earthly and friendly activities for the environment for the benefit of all.
