CONTROLLING
Presentation outline
• Introduction
• Control system
• Types of Control
• Control process
• Role of nurse manager in controlling
• Objectives of the presentation
At the end of the session you should able to:-
 Describe the control system & the process
 Discuss about the types of control systems
 Discuss the major roles of nurses manager in controlling &
practice them as a nurse manager
Controlling
• A process of monitoring performance and taking action to ensure
desired results
• Comparing result with predetermined standards of performance
and taking corrective action
Checking whether right things happen, in the right ways, and at
the right time.
• Checking whether overall directions of individuals and groups are
consistent with short- and long-range plans.
Helps maintain compliance with essential organizational rules
and policies.
Controlling
• Managers monitor and regulate how efficiently and effectively an
organization and its members are performing the activities necessary to
achieve organizational goals

• Managers must monitor and evaluate:

 Input against out put
 Accuracy of units of inputs and outputs measurements
 Quality
 Employees responsiveness to customers
 Customer satisfaction
 Control system
Control systems

• Target -setting, monitoring, evaluation and feedback

systems that provide managers with information about
whether the organization’s strategy and structure are
working efficiently and effectively
A good control system should
• Be flexible so managers can respond as needed.
• Provide accurate and timely information about the
organization
• Strategic and results oriented
• Understandable
• Encourage self-control
• Positive in nature
• Fair and objective
Types of control system

Control system varies by :

1. Stage of work
2. Person or group who perform it

3. Method

• Used to provide information at the
output stage about customers’
reactions to goods and services so
that corrective action can be taken if
necessary

Feedback • Sometimes called Post action

Controls controls, it take place after an action
is completed.

• It focus on end results, as opposed to

inputs and activities.

Control system by method

Bureaucratic Control
– Control through a system of rules and
standard operating procedures

Clan Control
– The control exerted on individuals and
groups in an organization by shared
values, norms, standards of behavior,
and expectations.

Steps In Control Process

Role &function of nurse manager in controlling

Four steps in the control process
Step1 .Establish Objectives and Standards
Performance objectives are defined and the standards for measuring them
are set
Two types
1. Output standards
• Measure performance results in terms of quantity, quality, cost, or time
2. Input standards
• Measure effort in terms of amount of work expended in task
performance
• Step 2 — Measuring Actual Performance
• Measurements must be accurate enough to spot deviations or variances
between what really occurs and what is most desired
• Must identify significant differences between actual results and original plan
• Effective control requires measurement
Step 3.Comparing Results with Objectives and Standards

• The comparison of actual performance with desired performance

establishes the need for action.

Managers evaluate whether and to what extent performance

deviates from the standards of performance chosen in step 1
Step 5. Taking Corrective Action
• Taking any action necessary to correct or
improve things.

• Evaluate result and initiate corrective

action if the standard is not being
achieved

• If managers decide that the level of

performance is unacceptable, they must try
to change the way work activities are
performed to solve the problem

Nursing Standards

• Statements that describe a level of

care or nursing performance by
which the quality of nursing
practice can be judged.

competent level of clinical nursing
Standards of practice, such as identifying problems

them

2. Standards of Performance
statement of competent role activities,
such as collaboration & quality of care
