Type of Power Conductor
ollowing type of Aluminium composite conductors are currently used for overhead
Transmission lines.
a) ACSR : Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced the most repesentative conductor
in the world its outer layer are composed of aluminium stranded wires for electric
current flow and inner layers are Galvanized steel strands for mechanical strength.
b) IACSR : A kind of ACSR having special aluminium wire that are alloyed with
ingredient of silicon ,magnesium and ferrous for the increasing its mechanical
strength.
c) TACSR : Thermo-resistance ACSR for application at higher conductor temperature
in order to increase current carrying capacity of the conductor.
d) ACSR with aluminium clad with steel core : ACSR stranded with aluminium clad
steel core for preventing rust of steel core and increasing its Mechanical breaking
strength.
e) ACAR :Aluminium conductor Aluminium Reinforced : Inner core is stranded
aluminium alloy for increasing its current carrying capacity.
f) AAAC : All Aluminium Alloy conductor without steel core.
g) Smoked ACSR : Sand blasted ACSR for prevention of sunshine reflection on
ACSR.
• Mechanical stronger IACSR is applied for longer spans to decrease conductor
• sag that will result in decrease of tower height.

Advantages:
(1) Due to corona formation, the air surrounding the conductor becomes
conducting and hence virtual diameter of the conductor is increased. The increased
diameter reduces the electrostatic stresses between the conductors.
(2) Corona reduces the effects of transients produced by surges.
Disadvantages:
(1) Corona is accompanied by a loss of energy.
(2) Ozone is produced by corona and may cause corrosion of the conductor due to
chemical reaction.
(3) The current drawn by the line due to corona is non-sinusoidal and hence non-
sinusoidal voltage drop occurs in the line. This may cause inductive
interference with neighboring communication line.
Bundled Conductors
undled conductor practice is generally applied for the extra high voltage transmission
nes due to the following excellent characteristic comparing with the conventional
ngle conductor per phase.
(1) Less corona loss and corona noise as noted above
(2) Less line voltage drop; less compensation facilities due to series reactance and
higher capacitance of the line.
(3) More current carrying capacity than line having the sectional area of single
conductor.
Insulator
Advantages and Disadvantages Associated with Difference Insulator Technologies
-Give visual indication of internal defects -Prime targets for vandals because of shattering
-Good puncture resistance -Surface may be etched by long-term dry-band
-Proven long-term reliability arcing resulting in shattering
Glass -Insulators from different manufactures -May require long insulator strings in polluted
are interchangeable and generally have conditions
similar performance -Heavy
-Lack of availability in certain regions
-Surface glazing resistant to etching from -May contain hidden internal defects
dry band activity -May require long insulator strings in polluted
-Do not shatter when shot by vandals conditions
Procelain -Proven long-term reliability -Heavy
-Insulators from different manufacturers -Lack of availability and time to delivery
are interchangeable and generally have in certain regions
similar performance
-Lighter weight(easier to handle and ship) -Unknow life expectancy
-Lower cost -Limited service experience
-Better availability and shorter lead times -Different designs, materials, and manufacturing
-Enables single pole structures(i.e post processes between suppliers.
Polymer application) -More susceptible to damage during handling
-Better shock loading characteristics -May contain hidden defects
(post only) -Concerns regarding live working
-Less susceptible to vandalism -Difficult to identify high risk units prior
-Better contamination performance to failure

Contamination
severity
The contamination is separated into the following two general cases:
(a)Industrial : The industrial contamination is caused by particles driven by the wind and deposited
on the insulator surface. The contamination may be dust from road or rural areas,
cement, fly ash, limestone, etc. These materials contain salt and form a conducting
layer when wetted.
(b) Sea : Salt-water spray driven by the wind can also contaminate insulating surfaces. This forms
a conducting layer. In this case, the contamination and wetting occurs simultaneously.
