Magnetic Field
Mechanism of Corona
Electric Corona occurs when the potential of a Conductor in air is raised to such
a value that the dielectric strength of surrounding air is exceeded .
Corona occurs in regions of high electric field strength on conductors, insulators,
and hardware when sufficient energy is imparted to charged particles to cause
ionization (partial breakdown) of the air.
Corona may result in radio and television reception interference, audible noise,
light, and production of small amount of oxidants (ozone and nitrous oxides).
Its occurs when the electric field or voltage gradient on the surface of the
Conductor or fitting exceeds a critical value, usually taken as 30 kV/cm(peak),
or about 21 kV/cm in standard atmospheric conditions.

(a) AC corona (b) DC corona

(a) AC corona (b) DC corona

Maximum Conductor Surface Gradient
The Maximum Conductor Surface Gradient (thereinafter called G max) is the main
factor of corona noise generation that affect transmission-line electric environmental
surrounding.Gmax is closely relative to conductor diameter, weather condition
Calculation of maximum conductor surface gradient
 Voltage coefficient of conductor i and j

(xb, yb) is coordinates of the center of conductor (bundle),

Re is the radius of conductor(equivalent single conductor radius in case of multi-conductor)
n : Number of sub-conductor
r0 : Sub-conductor radius
Re : Bundle radius
Sb : Distance between sub-
conductor
Vi : ith conductor voltage
 Line charge density :

 Maximum conductor surface gradient :

The Other factor of corona generation

1. Fair-weather corona sources

: Any remaining metal protrusions of the conductor,
insects, dust, spider, webs, vegetation, leaf particles
bird droppings and other nonmetal material

2. Foul-weather corona sources : effect of water on the conductor

3. Particles near the conductor

4. Air density, humidity and wind

5. Effect of Surface conditions

Aged conductor have less corona loss, less audible noise, and less radio noise
Corona reduction in transmission line

 Conductor corona considerations

- increasing the diameter of the conductor ( the use of bundle conductors)
 Hardware and Insulator corona reduction
- Design with smoothed contours
- Corona ring type of grading devices

- Rings prevent corona on tops of insulator stacks.

- Balls prevent corona on ends of bus.

Corona reduction in transmission line
Corona has advantages as well as disadvantages. In the correct design of
a high voltage overhead line, a balanced should be struck between the
advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:
(1) Due to corona formation, the air surrounding the conductor becomes
conducting and hence virtual diameter of the conductor is increased. The increased
diameter reduces the electrostatic stresses between the conductors.
(2) Corona reduces the effects of transients produced by surges.

Disadvantages:
(1) Corona is accompanied by a loss of energy.
(2) Ozone is produced by corona and may cause corrosion of the conductor due to
chemical reaction.
(3) The current drawn by the line due to corona is non-sinusoidal and hence non-
sinusoidal voltage drop occurs in the line. This may cause inductive
interference with neighboring communication line.
Bundled Conductors

undled conductor practice is generally applied for the extra high voltage transmission
nes due to the following excellent characteristic comparing with the conventional
ngle conductor per phase.
(1) Less corona loss and corona noise as noted above
(2) Less line voltage drop; less compensation facilities due to series reactance and
higher capacitance of the line.
(3) More current carrying capacity than line having the sectional area of single
conductor.

earthed structure under operating and over voltage conditions
 To act as a reliable mechanical link between the structure and
the conductor and keep the mechanical integrity under normal
operating and overload conditions.

mechanical load reached when the insulator unit is tested
under prescribed voltage conditions of test.

• Puncture voltage: The voltage which causes puncture of a

string insulator unit under prescribed conditions of test.

severity
The contamination is separated into the following two general cases:
(a)Industrial : The industrial contamination is caused by particles driven by the wind and deposited
on the insulator surface. The contamination may be dust from road or rural areas,
cement, fly ash, limestone, etc. These materials contain salt and form a conducting
layer when wetted.
(b) Sea : Salt-water spray driven by the wind can also contaminate insulating surfaces. This forms
a conducting layer. In this case, the contamination and wetting occurs simultaneously.

Vertical clearance between earth wire and top conductor?
This is governed by the shielding angle, i.e., the angle which the line
joining the ground wire and the outermost conductor makes with the
vertical, required for the interruption of direct lightning strokes at the
ground and the minimum mid-span clearance between the ground
wire and the top conductor.
The shielding angle varies form about 25 to 30˚, depending on the
configuration of conductors and the number of ground wires.

The shielding angle for high voltage (EI Regulation)
