Afrobeats

Afrobeat Vs Afrobeats
• Afrobeat is a Nigerian music genre that combines West African
musical styles (such as traditional Yoruba music and highlife) with
American funk, jazz, and soul influences. Pioneered in 1960 by Fela
Kuti
• Afrobeats describe a popular music style from West Africa and the
diaspora that initially developed in Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK in the
2000s and 2010s. it is less of a style per se, and more of a descriptor
for the fusion of sounds flowing out of Nigeria and Ghana
How it started
• Fela anikulapo-kuti
• Was to study medicine in UK
• Ended up with Music in Liverpool
• Back to Nigeria to start Afrika shrine
• 2 sons in music
Modern Afrobeats
• Descriptor for wide variety of west Africa pop music majorly from
Nigeria and Ghana
• More like fusion of many genres of music
• More appealing to the younger generations
My involvement
• Back-up singer and a drummer in hybrid afro-gospel band-
• Church choir band- singer, back up and play drums
• Early medical school days- church bands, learn to play piano and
guitar
• Later part of medical school training- Afrobeats started blooming-idea
of going full time music, met two lovely guys who also had similar
idea- one is now a pastor and the other is a business guy
• Now- still doing it, but more like motivation for my son and maybe for
other reasons
