WHAT DOES BEING VISUALLY
IMPAIRED MEAN?

Visual impairment is a term that is used to describe


any kind of vision loss, whether it's someone who
cannot see at all or someone who has partial vision
loss.
REASONS IN
BECOMING VISUALLY
IMPAIRED
• INHERITED CONDITIONS - Visual impairment can be passed down through
generations due to inherited genetic mutations or conditions. Individuals with a
family history of certain eye conditions may have an increased risk of inheriting
visual impairments.
• OLD AGE - As people age, the risk of developing age-related conditions such
as AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration), cataracts, glaucoma, and general
age-related changes
• CERTAIN ACCIDENTS - Accidents, including trauma or injury to the head or
eyes, chemical exposure, sports injuries, and car accidents, can result in damage
to eye structures or visual processing centers in the brain, leading to various
degrees of visual impairment.
COPING WITH VISUAL
IMPAIRMENT
• ADAPTIVE TECHNOLOGIES (SCREEN READERS, MAGNIFIERS) -
These software applications convert digital text into synthesized speech or
Braille, enabling individuals with visual impairment to access and navigate
digital content.
• ORIENTATION AND MOBILITY TRAINING - Training programs teach
skills for safe and independent navigation, including the use of mobility aids
like canes or guide dogs.
• SUPPORT SYSTEM - Emotional and practical support from close
relationships is crucial. Family and friends can assist with daily tasks,
provide companionship, and contribute to a positive and inclusive
environment.
WHO HELPS THE
BLIND?
A team of professionals is involved in educating the visually
impaired in Special Education. This includes:

- O&M Specialists
- Speech and language pathologists
- Physical education teachers
- Visual aid specialists
- Psychologists
- Social workers.
HOW TO DEAL WITH VISUALLY
IMPAIRED PERSON?

• DO introduce yourself and ask the person if he needs


assistance.
2. DO provide assistance if it is requested.
3. DO respect the wishes of the person who is blind.
4. DON'T insist upon trying to help if your offer of assistance
is declined.

GALILEO GALILEI
He was an Italian astronomer and an engineer, sometimes
described as a polymath. He was born in the city of Pisa,
Italy. He was the first to report telescopic observations of
the mountains on the moon, the moons of Jupiter, the
phases of Venus, and the rings of Saturn. He invented an
early microscope. He was slowly becoming blind by
staring and observing the sun too much and became
completely blind few months before his death bed.
JOHNY DEPP
John Christopher “Johnny” Depp II is an American
actor and musician known for his portrayals of
offbeat and eccentric characters such as Jack
Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series,
and Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
When he was young he was slowly becoming blind
in his left eye until his left eye become completely
blind, however his right eye was also slowly
becoming blind.
WILLIE MAXWELL II (FETTY WAP)
Willie Junior Maxwell II " Fetty Wap",
is an American rapper and singer. He
became famous after his first single "
Trap Queen", reached number two on
the U.S . Billboard Hot 100 chart in
May 2015. His left eye was removed
due to a car accident and only his right
eye remained.
HELEN KELLER
Helen Adam Keller was an American
author, disability rights advocate, political
activist and lecturer. She lost her sight and
her hearing after an unknow illness when
she was 19 months old. Most famous of
her personal triumph over the limitations
of both blindness and deafness.
