ANIMALS
The Moscow Water Dog

The Moscow water dog went extinct due to

the breed's (unexpected) aggressive nature
when exposed to drowning victims. This
dog was intended to be the ultimate water
rescue dog, so when the breed was more
inclined to bite drowning victims than save
them, the project was abandoned.
HAWAIIAN CROW
After living in Hawaii for thousands of
years, the Hawaiian crow — or 'alalā —
vanished from the wild in 2002. It fell
victim to a combination of threats, including
habitat loss, disease and introduced
predators like cats, rats and mongooses.
PLANTS
CALAMITES
They are an extinct genus of primitive,
vascular, tree-like plants related to the
isoetes and lycopsids. Their trunks are
believed to be 1 meter in diameter and they
used to reach up to a height of 30 meters and
more. They were mostly a part of the coal
forest flora. They became extinct when these
swamps disappeared.
Lepidodendron
Lepidodendron, went extinct approximately
300 million years ago. Their niche was
replaced largely by conifers, similar to the
trees we see growing in our forests today.
MICROORGANISM
S
SMALL POX VIRUS
Thousands of years ago, variola virus
(smallpox virus) emerged and began causing
illness and deaths in human populations,
with smallpox outbreaks occurring from
time to time. Thanks to the success of
vaccination, the last natural outbreak of
smallpox in the United States occurred in
1949.
POLIOMYELITIS
VIRUS
The annual number of wild poliovirus cases
has declined by more than 99.9% worldwide
from an estimated 350,000 in 1988 when the
Global Polio Eradication Initiative was
launched. Of the three serotypes of wild
poliovirus, type 2 was certified as eradicated
in 2015 and type 3 was certified as
eradicated in 2018.
