What is Weather and Climate?
What do you think is the difference between
weather and climate?
Weather
 Weather is defined as the
state of the atmosphere at
a given time and place
 is considered temporary
because it can change in a
short period, sometimes
from minute to minute, and
maybe different if you
change location
Climate
 is the average long-term
pattern of weather in a
particular area.

 It is the region’s general

pattern of atmospheric or
weather conditions,
seasonal conditions, or
weather extremes such as
prolonged drought or rain.
Learning concepts

Weather Climate
• can change in a short • general weather over
period (short-term) a long period (long-
• generally changes term)
from day to day • usually years or on a
year

Elements of Weather and Climate

There are several elements that makeup the weather and

climate of a place. The major of these elements are five:

 Temperature
 Pressure
 Wind
 Humidity
 Precipitation
 Cloud Formation
Elements of Weather and Climate

Analysis of these elements can provide the basis for

forecasting weather and defining its climate. These same
elements make also the basis of climatology study, of
course, within a longer time scale rather than it does in
meteorology.
Temperature
 is how hot or cold the atmosphere is, how many degrees
it is above or below freezing.
Wind

 is the movement of air masses, especially on the

Earth’s surface.
Humidity

 is the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere.

Precipitation
 is the product of rapid condensation process (if this
process is slow, it only causes cloudy skies). It may
include snow, hail, sleet, drizzle, fog, mist, and rain.
Atmospheric Pressure
 (or air pressure) is the weight
of air resting on the Earth’s
surface. Pressure is shown
on a weather map, often
called a synoptic map, with
lines called isobars.
Types of Climate

a) Tropical b) Dry c)Temperature

d) Continental e) Polar

1. High winds shut the Forth Road Bridge last night.
2. Richard booked his holiday to Malaga in July as it is usually
very hot then.
3. Arjun relies on the May to September Monsoon in India to
water his crops every year.
4. Ski resorts in the Alps do their best business in January and
February as that is when there is the most snow.
5. Wayoh Reservoir in Bolton completely dried up in the heat of
July 2018.
6. The Central England Temperature record shows that July is
the warmest month on average.
7. Heavy rainfall caused flooding to farmers’ fields over 5 days
