Mexican Revolution

TODAY I AM GOING TO TALK ABOUT EMILIANO ZAPATA

BIOGRAPHY
• Emiliano Zapata was born in Morelos (Mexico) on August 8, 1879. His parents were the
peasants Gabriel Zapata and Cleofás Salazar. His primary studies were carried out with
Professor Emilio Vera, an old soldier from Benito Ju árez. In his youth he worked as a farmer
and muleteer. In his town he stood out defending the peasants against the various abuses of
the landowners.

• On March 11, 1911, in Morelos, Emiliano Zapata rose up in arms against the dictatorship of
Porfirio Díaz, supporting Francisco Madero who had called for a national rebellion. On May
25, he launched the Plan de Ayala where he demanded to distribute the lands of the large
landowners to the peasants.

• In 1914, at the Aguas Calientes Convention, Zapata allied with Pancho Villa and shortly after
took Mexico City. But the forces of Venustiano Carranza forced him to return to Morelos,
where he installed a government that implemented some agrarian reforms.

• In Morelos he remained a rebel, until in 1919 when the Carrancista colonel Jes ús Guajardo
made him believe that he would join his cause, and invited him to meet at the Chinameca
hacienda. On April 10, 1919, Emiliano Zapata attended the meeting and was shot to death.
