INTRODUCTI
ON
American serial killer whose murders of 33 boys and
young men in the 1970s received international media
attention and shocked his suburban Chicago
community, where he was known for his sociability
and his performance as a clown at charitable events
and childrens’ parties.

Childhood of john
wayne gacy
Gacy was born to parents of Danish and Polish heritage in
1942 in Chicago, IL. He was the second child of his parents
with two sisters. The children had a strict Catholic
background, having attended Catholic school in North
Chicago (Bell & Bardsley, 2001). While his childhood was
normal, there were a few accidents and health problems that
Gacy suffered from. Those include a severe blow to his head
as a child while playing on a swing set that also had a
probable effect on his physical and mental health in later
years (Taylor, 2003). His father was a highly abusive
alcoholic and often ended up beating his wife and children
for trivial reasons (Sullivan & Maiken, 2012).
Career and
Family Life
Career and
Family Life
Gacy, a serial killer, attended Northwestern
Business College in Chicago and worked as a
salesman and manager at a shoe company. He
married Marlynn Myers, whose father owned
three KFC restaurants in Iowa. Gacy became a
self-made building contractor and Democratic
precinct captain in the 1970s, possibly to
antagonize his father who mocked his interest in
politics. He organized cultural gatherings and was
active in political organizations, earning praise
from his father. Gacy was a member of a Chicago-
area "Jolly Joker" clown club and performed as
"Pogo the Clown" or "Patches the Clown."

First Sexual Assaults and
Arrest
In 1968, John Wayne Gacy was accused of
sexually assaulting a teenage boy and attempting
to assault another. He was convicted and served a
10-year prison sentence. Gacy was released on
parole in 1970 but was arrested again in 1970 for
attempting to force a teen into sex. With financial
assistance, Gacy bought a house in Norwood
Park, Illinois, where his future murders would
take place. In 1971, he started PDM Contractors
and married Carole Hoff. Gacy would proposition
young men for sex, sometimes under threat.

Gacy’s Victims
John Wayne Gacy’s
Victims
John Wayne Gacy was convicted of killing 33
young men and boys in the Chicago area in the
1970s. Authorities found most of his victims’
remains in a crawl space under his suburban
Chicago house or buried elsewhere on the
property. In 2011, they exhumed the remains of
eight victims in the hopes of identifying them
through DNA testing. On Monday, authorities
identified the third of those eight people as
Francis Wayne Alexander, a North Carolina native
who moved with his family to New York State as
a child and then to Chicago shortly before he
disappeared. That left the names of five victims
still unknown.
