RIGHTEOUSNESS BY

FAITH
THAT I MAY BE FOUND IN HIM NOT HAVING MINE OWN
RIGHTEOUSNESS
PHILIPPIANS 3:9
NOT SO MUCH TO TALK
ABOUT
•Righteousness is a product of
Justification and sanctification
•So if we understand and seek to be
Justified and sanctified by faith we
will end up being righteous by faith
AN ANCIENT AND PRESENT
•TRUTH
One of the widely taught themes of the Bible
•From the first day that man sinned, God
sought to teach him righteousness by faith
{Genesis 3:21}
•In killing a lamb, He desired to point him to
the Redeemer who was to come {John 1:29}
GENESIS 3:21
•The lamb died in stead of Adam and Eve
•According to Genesis 3; 1-5, Romans 6:23,
Adam and Eve were supposed to die
•For without the shedding of blood is no
remission (Hebrews 9:22)
•Why the shedding of the blood?
GENESIS 3:21
For the life of the flesh is in the blood and I
have given it to you upon the altar to make
an atonement for your souls: for it is the
blood that maketh an atonement for the
soul.
Leviticus 17:11
•JUSTIFIED
So Adam and BY FAITH
Eve were Justified through
faith in Christ.
•The lessons of Justification and
righteousness by faith continued through
succeeding generations and it will remain an
important topic until the close of time
AT THE CLOSE OF TIME
• And be found in Him, not having mine own
righteousness which is of the law, but that which
is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness
which is of God by faith. {Philippians 3:9}
• So at the coming of Jesus we will need to have
His righteousness and not ours.
CONCEPTS EXPLAINED
•Justification = Pardon; an offender goes
free and an innocent victim suffers the
penalty.
•Sanctification = Make holy
 Can be achieved through obedience
JUSTIFICATION

• As penitent sinners, contrite before God, discern Christ’s

atonement in their behalf, and accept this atonement as
their only hope in this life and the future life, their sins are
pardoned. This is justification by faith. …. Pardon and
justification are one and the same thing. . . . {Christ
Triumphant 150.3}
• 6 Bible Commentary 1071
JUSTIFICATION
“As the penitent sinner, contrite before God, discerns Christ's atonement in his
behalf, and accepts this atonement as his only hope in this life and the future
life, his sins are pardoned. This is justification by faith... Pardon and
justification are one and the same thing. Through faith, the believer
passes from the position of a rebel, a child of sin and Satan, to the
position of a loyal subject of Christ Jesus, not because of an inherent
goodness, but because Christ receives him as His child by adoption…
"The grace of Christ is freely to justify the sinner without merit or claim on
his part. Justification is a full, complete pardon of sin. The moment a sinner
accepts Christ by faith, that moment he is pardoned. The righteousness of
Christ is imputed to him, and he is no more to doubt God's forgiving grace."
IMPUTE

•Represent something as being done or

possessed by someone

Zech 3:1,3,4; Isiah 64:6

•“The righteousness by which we are
Justified is imputed. The righteousness by
which we are sanctified is imparted. The
first is our title to heaven; the second is our
fitness for heaven.” The Review and Herald,
June 4, 1895.
IMPART,

• 1. To give, grant or communicate; to bestow on

another a share or portion of something; as, to
impart a portion of provisions to the poor.
• 2. To grant; to give; to confer; as, to impart honor
or favor.
SANCTIFY THEM THROUGH THY
•WORD
Sanctify them through Thy word, Thy word
is truth. {John 17:17}
• … Thy law is the truth {Psalms 119:142}
•Bible sanctification does not teach to make
void of the law of God because the law is the
truth through which we will be sanctified.
SANCTIFICATION

•“Sanctification is the result of

lifelong obedience.”—Acts of the
Apostles, 560.
SANCTIFICATION

•“Sanctification consists in the cheerful

performance of daily duties in perfect
obedience to the will of God.”—
Christ’s Object Lessons, 360.
SANCTIFICATION IS HOLISTIC
• And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly;
and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and
body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our
Lord Jesus Christ. {1 Thessalonians 5:23}

REGARD FOR HEALTH
• “It is not merely a theory, an emotion, or a form of words,
but a living, active principle, entering into the everyday
life. It requires that our habits of eating, drinking, and
dressing, be such as to secure the preservation of
physical, mental, and moral health, that we may present
to the Lord our bodies—not an offering corrupted by
wrong habits but—‘a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable
unto God.’
DOES GOD REALLY HAVE ANYTHING
TO DO WITH DRESSING?
• Exo 19:10 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the
people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let
them wash their clothes,
• Exo 19:11 And be ready against the third day: for the third
day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people
upon mount Sinai.
REGARD FOR
HEALTH
• “Let none who profess godliness regard with
indifference the health of the body, and flatter
themselves that intemperance is no sin, and will not
affect their spirituality. A close sympathy exists
between the physical and the moral nature.” —
Counsels on Diet and Foods, 164-165.
A VIOLATION OF THE LAWS OF OUR BEING
IS A VIOLATION OF THE TEN
COMMANDMENTS
• The transgression of physical law is transgression of
God's law. Our Creator is Jesus Christ. He is the author
of our being. He is the author of the physical law as he
is the author of the moral law. And the human being
who is careless and reckless of the habits and practises
that concern his physical life and health, sins against
God….-- U. T., May 19, 1897. {HL 17.4}
A VIOLATION OF THE LAWS OF OUR BEING IS
A VIOLATION OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
• Every needless transgression of the laws which God has
established in our being, is virtually a violation of the law of
God, and is as great a sin in the sight of Heaven as to break
the ten commandments. Ignorance upon this important
subject, is sin; the light is now beaming upon us, and we
are without excuse if we do not cherish the light, and
become intelligent in regard to these things, which it is
our highest earthly interest to understand. -- {Health
Reformer, August 1, 1866 par. 8}
SANCTIFICATIO
N
•Since sanctification can be achieved
through obedience, if follows that if we
are disobedient we cannot be sanctified.
OBEDIENCE IS A RESULT OF
SUBMITTING TO THE WORD/GOD

Study the Word Do = Obedience Sanctification

PRAYER
• Some, fearing they will suffer loss of earthly treasure, neglect prayer and the assembling
of themselves together for the worship of God, that they may have more time to devote to
their farms or their business. They show by their works which world they place the
highest estimate upon. They sacrifice religious privileges, which are essential to their
spiritual advancement, for the things of this life and fail to obtain a knowledge of the
divine will. They come short of perfecting Christian character and do not meet
the measurement of God. They make their temporal, worldly interests first, and rob
God of the time which they should devote to His service. Such persons God marks, and
they will receive a curse rather than a blessing. Some place their means beyond their
control by putting it into the hands of their children. Their secret motive is to place
themselves in a position where they will not feel responsible to give of their property to
spread the truth. These love in word, but not in deed and in truth. They do not realize that
it is the Lord's money they are handling, not their own. {2T 654.1}

SIN MUST BE PUT AWAY

•“The righteousness of Christ is not a cloak to

CHRIST IS WAITING

• Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in

His church. When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced
in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own . {LDE 39.2}
• It is the privilege of every Christian, not only to look for, but to hasten the
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Were all who profess His name bearing fruit to His
glory, how quickly the whole world would be sown with the seed of the gospel.
Quickly the last great harvest would be ripened, and Christ would come to gather the
precious grain.--COL 69 (1900). {LDE 39.3}
• By giving the gospel to the world it is in our power to hasten our Lord's return.
We are not only to look for but to hasten the coming of the day of God (2 Peter 3:12,
margin).--DA 633 (1898). {LDE 39.4}
