Strategies to sustain and improve the results
1. Baseline assessment – results submitted to SESs
2. Topic tests at the end of each topic – Results to be submitted to
SESs
3. Provide terminology-based activities per topic - monitored by SESs
4. Diagrams or mind maps.
5. Case studies/reading with understanding
6. An investigative question must be included in EVERY formal test
and exam paper – moderation by DH.
7. Common SBA practicals
8. Intervention classes

Continuous assessment/feedback /LRP

Baseline test – when starting a new topic, assess what prior

knowledge learners have. For example: grade 10 cells – what
do they remember from previous grades etc.

Topic tests – this shows you what the learners know. Did they
learn anything?

Please forward the stats to your SES

Training:

16 April – Exam paper setting

Grade 10 & 11
7 May – Scientific investigations

Other training might be added

throughout the year
Grade 10 & 11

This is the basics that

learners must do
RELABs
Provide them with extra
questions and activities

Use resources from our

google drive
Calculations

Learners are expected to round off their answers to two decimal points unless stated otherwise
Scientific investigations
• A greater emphasis on practical work and practical tasks of good
quality in Grades 10 and 11 will assist in preparing learners more
adequately for questions based on scientific investigations.

• Learners must be challenged to design their own investigations by

being given an 'observation', 'hypothesis' or 'aim’.

• Use the practical worksheets provided on Google

drive

• Training on practical investigation question will be done online 7 May

Practical worksheets – how to use it
WORKSHEET 3 (a)
Aim: To demonstrate that oxygen is used Ask questions like:
during respiration
Apparatus: What are the variables?
•Two vials Oxygen and respiration
•2 stoppers Always look at the AIM not the results, the results shows how the dependent
•2 gauze sacs with lining is measured. Never refer to independent as the “effect of something” this
•Germinating seeds changes the meaning.
•Boiled seeds
•Methylene blue solution Which is independent and dependent?
•Pipette Independent = respiration(one we change)
•Method: Dependent= oxygen (one we measure)

Usually, the independent is written first and dependent second in the aim.
So, this aim will be better written as:
To demonstrate that respiration requires oxygen

What is the purpose of the control?

A 'control' is a group in an experiment that does not receive the treatment of the
independent variable tested.

To see if oxygen used depleted because of respiration and not another

variable/factor. Comparing the results of the experiment where respiration took
place to the control where no respiration took place.
Practical worksheet – how to use
Observations:
Vial State of Colour of Colour of Oxygen:
seeds: methylene blue methylene blue present/absent
living/dead solution at the solution at the
beginning of the end of the
experiment experiment

Discussion: Discuss what the observations mean

Conclusion: Refer to the two variables. Give the relationship between the two variables.
