Massachusetts State
• Massachusetts, officially known as the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts, is the most populous state in the New
England region of the northeastern United States

• It borders on the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the states of


Connecticut and Rhode Island to the south, New Hampshire
and Vermont to the north, and New York to the west

• The capital of Massachusetts is Boston, which is also the


most populous city in New England

• Boston is not only the capital and most populus
city of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, it is
also the 21st most populus city in the United
States

• The city proper covers 49 square miles (127 km2)


with an estimated population of 692,600 in
2019, making it the seat of Suffolk County
(although the county government was disbanded
on July 1, 1999)

• It was originally used in the 1913 Columbus
Day celebration and other holidays in an unofficial
capacity for three years until it was officially adopted
by the city government on January 29, 1917

• It uses the city seal, which was designed in 1823 and


officially adopted in 1914. The motto contained
within the seal are the Latin words ”Sicut Patribus
Sit Deus Nobis”, meaning "God be with us as he was
with our fathers"

• The Boston Public Schools enroll 57,000 students
attending 145 schools, including the
renowned Boston Latin Academy, John D. O’Bryant
School of Math & Science, and Boston Latin School

• The Boston Latin School was established in 1635 and


is the oldest public high school in the US

• Boston also operates the United States' second-oldest


public high school and its oldest public elementary
school

• The system's students are 40% Hispanic or Latino,


35% Black or African American, 13% White, and 9%

• Boston has teams in the four major North
American professional sports leagued plus Major
League Soccer, and, as of 2019, has won 39
championships in these leagues

• It is one of eight cities (along with Chicago,


Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, St.
Louis and Washington) to have won
championships in all four major American sports
leagues

• It has been suggested that Boston is the new "Title
Town, USA", as the city's professional sports teams
have won twelve championships since 2001: Patriots
(2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016 and 2018), Red Sox
(2004, 2007, 2013, and 2018), Celtics (2008), and
Bruins (2011)

• This love of sports made Boston the United States


Olympic Committee’s choice to bid to hold the2024
Summer Olympic Games , but the city cited financial
concerns when it withdrew its bid on July 27, 2015.
