Introduction
o Wind energy is one of the most available and exploitable
sources of renewable energy.
o Among them DFIG wind turbines are widely used
 Lower converter cost
 Sub- and super-synchronous speed
 Reduced filter etc.
o However, the stator terminals of these generators are directly
connected to the grid.

3
Cont’d…
o Highly vulnerable to power system faults mainly to
voltage dips.
o So, this project is proposing hybrid SDBR and crowbar to
improve their LVRT capability.
o A fuzzy logic controller will be applied.
o Case study on Adama II wind power.

4
Problem statement
o During grid fault, voltage dips at the POI happens which in
further leads to
 Inrush the stator and rotor currents
 DC bus over voltages

o Adama II wind turbines are facing these voltage dips

challenges

 90% faced damages on their generator rotor terminals and

converter IGBT modules
 60% experienced defects on their crowbar IGBT’s

5
Cont’d…
o As a result, this work is planning an effective measure of
 Protection and
 Control approach to mitigate the aforementioned problems.
o Moreover, it will enhance the generator’s performance, and
the stability as well as quality of the grid.

6
Objectives
General Objective
o To enhance the LVRT of DFIG wind powers with SDBR and
crowbar protections using fuzzy logic controller.
Specific Objectives
 To model and simulate the whole system in MATLAB/Simulink
 Investigate the generator’s performance at steady as well as
transient states.
 To compare the LVRT enhancing devices using FLC and PI
controllers.

7
Significance of the study
o This research work will benefits directly or indirectly
 DFIG wind turbine owners, including EEP

 The researcher

8
Expected outcome
o In the end, this project result is expected to show

 Well LVRT enhanced generator will achieve while using

FLC than a PI one.

9
Scope and Delimitation
o In this project
 Evaluation of an appropriate value of SDBR
 The generator, converter, etc. parameters will be taken from
Adama II wind power
 Modelling and simulation will be done in MATLAB/Simulink

o A detailed analysis for determining crowbar resistance will not

be fulfilled.
o However, its brainstorm selection techniques will be presented
in the introduction.
