What is INTERCULTURAL
EDUCATION?
• The process through which people
become aware of other ways of
thinking, living or behaving and how
they perceive their experiences with
others.

• The education based on values like


tolerance, empathy, respect, solidarity
and mutual assistance.
UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF
HUMAN RIGHTS (1948)
• Education shall be directed to the full development
of human personality and to the strengthening of
respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
It shall promote understanding, tolerance and
friendship among all nations, racial and religious
groups, and shall further the activities of the United
Nations for the maintenance of peace.
THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF
INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION
1. Enhancing the efficiency of intercultural relations;
2. Increasing tolerance and acceptance towards those
who are different
3. Training people to make them
perceive, accept and respect diversity tor mediating
social relations.
Intercultural education means any systematic effort, in order to develop in the
members of the majority groups as in those of the minority groups the following
abilities
1. Better understanding of the situation of culture in modern
Societies;
2. Greater ability to communicate with people of different
cultures;
3. Attitudes better adapted to the context of different cultures
and groups in a given society
4. Better ability to participate in social interaction, creating
identities and common humanity
BENEFIT KNOWING THE INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION

1. The promotion of curiosity about cultural and social


differences;
2. The development of imagination through the normalization of
differences;
3. The development of critical thinking by encouraging people to
investigate their own intercultural practices and, in this way, to
modify the perspective of their own culture and practices;
4. The development of sensitivity towards intercultural issues;
5. The prevention of rasism;
The conditions for a successful achievement
in intercultural education
1. Creating balance between the various goals of education (on
qualifications, cultural, social and personal development);
2. Providing opportunities for communication and cooperation in
heterogeneous groups;
3. Providing equal opportunities to participate in classroom
interactions: creating the necessary conditions for the participation
of all students in the educational process and focusing attention on
knowledge and skills of each child (through an individual approach);
4. Reflecting in the school curriculum the characteristics of the
multicultural society (not a curriculum oriented towards
ethnocentrism but a curriculum oriented towards globalization);
