Personality
Personality refers to the enduring characteristics and behavior that comprise a person’s
unique adjustment to life, including major traits, interests, drives, values, self-concept,
abilities, and emotional patterns. It is the combination of characteristics or qualities that
form an individual's distinctive character. Our personality guides how we interact with
others, make decisions, and cope with challenges. It influences our attitudes, values,
and beliefs, and shapes our emotional responses to different situations. In this way, our
personality colors our moods, fuels our passions, and leaves an imprint on those around
us

What is personal development?

Personal development is all about turning your focus inward to enhance
yourself by boosting self-awareness, self-confidence, expertise, and
accomplishing your goals.

Personal development is much larger than just career development or self-

development. It encompasses all aspects of your life where you’d like to see
personal growth — and it doesn’t discriminate on where it shows up for you.

5 areas of Personal Development

Maslow's hierarchy of needs states that fulfilling our basic needs is necessary
to reach our fullest potential, which includes self-actualization and high levels
of self-awareness, confidence, growth, and realization. Maslow's hierarchy of
needs breaks down personal development into five areas. Different personal
development goals can fit into different categories..

Mental Development
Keeping your mind active and maintaining mental fitness is essential for
personal growth. Mental development can encompass various activities, such
as attending workshops, undergoing training sessions, or simply taking a
break. Taking breaks is equally (if not more) crucial as exercising your mind.
As your mental fitness improves, so does your ability to bounce back from
setbacks, come up with innovative ideas, and be more self-aware.

Social Development
Social connections and relationships are crucial for personal development.
Humans are social creatures who require these connections to learn and grow.
Through social connections, we acquire vital abilities like communication
skills, problem-solving, and the capacity to give and receive feedback. We also
learn from those around us.

Spiritual Development
Spirituality is not the same as religion, but it can foster personal growth
regardless of religious beliefs. Through spiritual practices, individuals can gain
a deeper understanding of themselves and the world, become more self-aware,
and develop their values.
LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

Emotional Development
Emotional intelligence is understanding how our feelings shape our thoughts
and actions. Personal experiences aid in emotional development. Reflecting on
our journey helps us identify our personal growth. Emotional intelligence is
essential in comprehending this.

Physical Development
"A healthy body nurtures a healthy mind - physical, mental and emotional
well-being are intertwined. Focus on physical health through nutrition, sleep,
exercise and movement. Nourishing your physical self can benefit your mind.
Improve this area of personal development and note how you feel."

Understanding the Theoretical

Foundation of Personality
LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY

Theories of personality seek to explain how personality forms, how

it changes, and the impact it has on behavior. In order to understand
the personality theories in psychology, it is essential to understand
some of the basics about personality.
LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY

Major Theories of Personality

Personality psychology is the focus of some of the best-known
psychology theories by a number of famous thinkers including Sigmund
Freud and Erik Erikson. Some of these theories attempt to tackle a specific
area of personality while others attempt to explain personality much more
broadly.

• Five of the main theories of personality are biological theories,

behavioral theories, psychodynamic theories, humanist theories, and
trait theories.
LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

Biological Theories of Personality

Biological approaches suggest that genetics are responsible for personality. In the
classic nature versus nurture debate, the biological theories of personality side with
nature.

Research on heritability suggests that there is a link between genetics and personality
traits. Twin studies are often used to investigate which traits might be linked to genetics
versus those that might be linked to environmental variables. For example, researchers
might look at differences and similarities in the personalities of twins reared together
versus those who are raised apart.

Biological Theories of Personality

One of the best known biological theorists was Hans Eysenck, who linked
aspects of personality to biological processes.

Eysenck argued that personality is influenced by the stress hormone

cortisol. According to his theory, introverts have high cortical arousal and
avoid stimulation, while extroverts had low cortical arousal and crave
stimulation.
LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY

Behavioral Theories of Personality

Behavioral theorists include B. F. Skinner and John B. Watson. Behavioral
theories suggest that personality is a result of interaction between the
individual and the environment. Behavioral theorists study observable and
measurable behaviors, rejecting theories that take internal thoughts, moods,
and feelings play a part as these cannot be measured.
LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

Behavioral Theories of Personality

According to behavioral theorists, conditioning (predictable behavioral

responses) occurs through interactions with our environment which
ultimately shapes our personalities.
LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

Psychodynamic Theories of Personality

Psychodynamic theories of personality are heavily influenced by the work

of Sigmund Freud and emphasize the influence of the unconscious mind
and childhood experiences on personality. Psychodynamic theories include
Sigmund Freud's psychosexual stage theory and Erik Erikson's
stages of psychosocial development.
LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

Psychodynamic Theories of Personality

Freud believed the three components of personality were the id, ego, and
superego. The id is responsible for needs and urges, while the superego
regulates ideals and morals. The ego, in turn, moderates the demands of the
id, superego, and reality.

Freud suggested that children progress through a series of stages in which

the id's energy is focused on different erogenous zones.
LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

Psychodynamic Theories of Personality

Erikson also believed that personality progressed through a series of stages,

with certain conflicts arising at each stage. Success in any stage depends on
successfully overcoming these conflicts.
LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

Humanist Theories of Personality

Humanist theories emphasize the importance of free will and individual
experience in the development of personality. Humanist theorists include
Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow.

Humanist theorists promote the concept of self-actualization, which is the

innate need for personal growth and the ways that personal growth
motivates behavior.
LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

Trait Theories of Personality

The trait theory approach is one of the most prominent areas in personality
psychology. According to these theories, personality is made up of a number of
broad traits. A trait is a relatively stable characteristic that causes an individual
to behave in certain ways. It is essentially the psychological "blueprint" that
informs behavioral patterns.

Some of the best-known trait theories include Eysenck's three-dimension

theory and the five-factor theory of personality.

“PERSONALITY TYPES”

Dave Andal LSPU O1

LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION
Personality types are a way of categorizing and understanding individual
differences in human behavior, thoughts, and feelings. There are various models
and theories that attempt to classify personality. Each person is a unique
combination of four personality types. these basic categories have gone by
several names and designations, but for our purposes, they're known as the
director, the socializer, the thinker, and the supporter. As shorthand, though, we
refer to those types of personality as A, B, C, and D, respectively.

Type A
Most people now know that Type A personality characteristics have something to
do with being competitive and work-obsessed, and that they can bring an increased risk of
health problems. But it’s not always understood exactly what traits constitute Type A
behavior, or exactly how these traits impact health and wellbeing. Type A personality traits,
including competitiveness, time urgency, and a tendency toward workaholism, can be seen
(particularly by Type A people) as beneficial for career success.
• Type A: Perfectionist, impatient, competitive, work-obsessed, achievement-oriented,
aggressive, stressed, Embraces change, Ambitious, Works well independently, Dominant
and stubborn.

Type B
People with a Type B personality are often described as easygoing, relaxed, and highly
flexible. The type B personality is basically the opposite of the type A. People with a type A
personality are meticulous, whereas type B people tend to take a much more casual, carefree
approach.
The Type B personality is a very easygoing, flexible, and laid-back individual who enjoys the
company of others and forming new relationships. Type B personalities are characterized by
their tendency to shy away from conflict or stressful situations.
• Type B: Low stress, even-tempered, flexible, creative, adaptable to change, patient,
tendency to procrastinate, Easily bored, Easily liked by most people

Type C
People with Type C personality tend to be more passive; they may put the needs of
others before their own and repress any negative emotions. Type C personalities are detail-
oriented individuals who prioritize logic and rational thinking when making decisions.
They're careful, resourceful, and, above all, excellent thinkers who will look at all aspects of
an issue before taking a stand. Type C personalities are analytical and objective, relying on
research and facts rather than opinions based on emotion.

Type C: Highly conscientious, perfectionist, struggles to reveal emotions (positive and

negative), Skeptical, Lawful, Organized, Analytical and critical

Type D
The Type D personality proceeds at a slower, safer pace in their work and personal lives.
They seek security and longevity and find comfort in routine. Type D personalities dislike
change and tend to keep to themselves as opposed to engaging in social situations. People with
Type D personality traits are usually very organized; being around a messy environment or
disorganization will bother them. Type D personality are more likely to be lonely and anxious.
They're also good at playing a very supportive role with others

Type D: Shy, low-key and observant, Caring, Sincere Consistent, dependable, Calm and stable,

The goal of the MBTI is to allow respondents to further explore and
understand their own personalities including their likes, dislikes,
strengths, weaknesses, possible career preferences, and compatibility with
other people.

CONCLUSION
Personality types provide valuable frameworks for understanding
and categorizing human behavior. While each model has its strengths and
weaknesses, they collectively contribute to the field of psychology and
personal development. Studying personality types enriches our
understanding of human diversity and enhances our ability to navigate
complex social and professional environments.

• Consistency: There is generally a recognizable order and

regularity to behaviors. Essentially, people act in the same way
or in similar ways in a variety of situations.
• Both psychological and physiological: Personality is a
psychological construct, but research suggests that it is also
influenced by biological processes and needs.

• Affects behaviors and actions: Personality not only influences

how we move and respond in our environment, but it also
causes us to act in certain ways.
• Multiple expressions: Personality is displayed in more than just
behavior. It can also be seen in our thoughts, feelings, close
relationships, and other social interactions.
