The Education system

in the UK
Kindergarten (Early Years/Foundation Stage):

Children between 3 and 5 years

old typically participate in a

kindergarten or similar setting

to develop basic and social

skills before starting

elementary school
Primary School

Children start studying in


primary school from about 5 to
11 years old.

The academic program here


focuses on developing basic
skills such as reading, writing,
and mathematics, as well as a
range of other subjects such as
science and art
Secondary School

From around age 11 to 16,


students enter the middle
school stage.

Here, they continue to


study basic subjects and
prepare for the GCSE
(General Certificate of
Secondary Education)
national exam at the end of
this period.
Secondary school

Under the UK school system, all


students study English, Maths,
Sciences, a Humanity and a
Modern Language. Besides
these subjects, each school has
a list with optional subjects, and
students may choose a few
subjects that interest them.
In the last two years of secondary education,
which are called Year 10 and Year 11, starting
at age 14, students prepare for GCSE exams
that are taken after two years (General
Certificate of Secondary Education).
High school or Sixth Form/College

After completing secondary


school, students can choose
to continue into high school
or specialist university.
Here, they continue
studying A-levels or
equivalent programmes,
preparing them for
university or a career.
Universities

England has some of the world's


leading universities.

Students usually study a bachelor's


degree program for about three years
or higher degree programs such as a
master's degree or doctorate (Ph.D.
