BME (11) – Learning, education, the school system

Essay 1

When children are 2 or 3 years old, they sometimes go to a nursery school, where they learn
simple games and songs. In England there are not enough nursery schools for all children
under five, so parents themselves often form play groups for children under five where they
can go a couple of times a week. From 5 to 7 years, children go to infant schools and from 8
to 11 years to junior schools. From the age of 11 most children attend a comprehensive school
until the age of 16 or 18. Higher education covers universities, polytechnics and colleges of
education.

In the United States children start the 8-grade elementary school at the age of six. After the
elementary school, the students attend four years of high school. In some cases, students
between 12-14 go to junior high school and then attend a 3-year high school. After high
school the students can attend university for four years. State and private university masters’
degrees are completed in one to two years, and doctoral degrees can take seven years.

It’s the same in Hungary. Children’s first real school is called a primary school. Usually at the
age of six, but parents can decide whether those children who were born in autumn start when
they are six, or a year later.  In England they start at the age of five and in the States the
system is the same as in Hungary. Secondary education begins at the age of about 14.

In Hungary there are secondary grammar, secondary technical and vocational schools. Mostly
those students choose secondary grammar schools who plan to go on to higher education.
Students who would like to learn a trade or profession besides passing their school-leaving
exam go to secondary technical schools. I passed the school-leaving exam in a Secondary
School of Economics. Vocational schools train skilled workers, such as plumbers, joiners and
hairdressers. The training lasts three years in these schools.

After high-school graduation they can go to university or college. These courses normally last
4 years and then students graduate, which means they receive their degree. At university,
teaching is by tutorial, seminar, lecture and of course private study. Most people who receive
a university place are given a grant by the government to help pay their fees and living
expenses.

Full-time students attend school on weekdays and correspondence students go to classes

mainly on Fridays and Saturday. I went to college every second Friday and Saturday, so I
could work or I could stay at home with my child.
Other facilities of continuing professional education are the crash-courses and OKJ trainings,
where you get an official and received certificate.

Nowadays most young people want to become economists, lawyers or deal with some field of
computer science. Many of them think that it will be easy to find well-paying jobs with these
degrees.

The program of student barter is a very good thing. Students can meet foreign people,
countries and cultures, and during they learn foreign languages. I think it has only advantages.

Essay 2 - Essay about Hungary

I think we need to learn all over our lifetime. A baby learns his or her mother language in 3
years whereas a student learns a foreign language for 10-12 years. The Hungarian educational
system has different levels. Firstly, little children can go to the crèche till the age of 3 so
parents can go back to work. Next is kindergarten where the child learns how to be together
with other children. When the children are 6 years old, they go to primary school. In the first
class they learn reading and writing. After that, they have a lot of other subjects, for example,
history, geography, biology, maths, chemistry, Hungarian language and literature and foreign
language (English and German languages are the most popular). After primary school
children must choose a secondary school. They can go to a secondary grammar school or
a vocational grammar school. Secondary school is more difficult than primary school. There
are a lot of requirements and curriculums. At the end of the fourth year the students take the
final exam. It takes 5 subjects: maths, history, Hungarian language and literature, foreign
language and an optional subject. After secondary school students can go to university or
college where they can choose what they would like to learn.

Essay 3 - Essay about England

Education is important in England.

English children are required by law  to have an education until they are 16 years old.

Education is compulsory, but school is not, children are not required to attend school. They
could  be educated at home.

Education is free for all children from 5 to 18.
About 94 per cent  of pupils in the UK receive free education from public funds, while 6 per
cent attend independent fee paying schools.

At the age of 16, students write an examination called the GCSE (General Certificate of

Secondary Education). All students are tested in mathematics, English literature, English
composition, chemistry, biology, physics, history or the Classics, one modern language, and
one other subject, such as art or computer studies.
After completing the GCSE, some students leave school, others go onto technical college,
whilst others continue at high school for two more years and take a further set of
standardized exams, known as A levels, in three or four subjects. These exams determine
whether a student is eligible for university.

Education stages:
Children’s education in England is normally divided into two separate stages. They begin
with primary education at the age of five and this usually lasts until they are eleven. Then
they move to secondary school, there they stay until they reach sixteen, seventeen or eighteen
years of age.

compulsory. In this place, they will learn the basic things, singing, saying poems and get to

I'm learning a foreign language for a year. This language is English. I like to learn English,
because English is a beautiful language. However learn English is not easy. There are many
words to learn, and a logic different than my native language. I read a lot, and make
translation. I go to a private teacher who helps me to learn. I'm trying to use modern tools for
learning. Eg. I use mobile applications for example. the quizlet, Duolingo. And I watch a lot
of English-language video on youtube.
It's hard task to learn English, because I have little time left to learn. I work a lot and I play
with the kids a lot.
Speak a foreign language is very important. If people speak foreign languages it can open the
world to him. He can read a foreign language news and novels. He can watch a lot of movies.
It is easily to navigate abroad. And he can easily know foreign people. When people speak
foreign languages, this also help in work. Because on the Internet many documents are in
English. What can only be read if a man speaks English.

Wikipedia – Exchange programmes

A student exchange program is a program in which students from a secondary school or

university study abroad at one of their institution's partner institutions.

A student exchange program may involve international travel, but does not necessarily require
the student to study outside their home country.

Foreign exchange programs provide students with an opportunity to study in a different

country and environment experiencing the history and culture of another country, as well as
meeting new friends to enrich their personal development. International exchange programs
are also effective to challenge students to develop a global perspective.
